After the top half of the inning where CC strikes out the side and gets the crowd and team pumped I think you have to match that intensity by bringing in your best power pitcher in that situation which was CoCo to save the game (not from a statistical standpoint obviously but to ensure the game goes extras). Not to mention Weathers although pitching fabolous on the road but he's been used a lot lately. Solid trip I guess but to me its disapointing when they were in a perfect position for the winning road trip.

July 14, 200818 yr Oh boy. I was on the verge of thinking mabe something good about this team. I was an eyelash away from jumping on the proverbial bandwagon. Ah but I watched the game today. I'm watching the "Savior" spinning a masterpiece. Adam Dunn hit a SAC fly for Pete's sake. I'm almost there. Then in comes Bray. The bats are in the dumper and then Stormy pitches 2! innings. Thanks guys. Whew! That was close. I still leave my prediction at 83-79. Now that is optimistic! I'm with you. I also thought they should have sent Phillips with 2 outs when he was on first. It looked like he was struggling with CC's move but you have to roll the dice there IMO. A steal + basehit could have been a winner. Instead he sits on first and Jr strikes out.
July 14, 200818 yr Loss of Burton and this game shows you why you don't want to trade Coco. No one to pitch the 8th exactly like last year. Except in a tied game, the 8th became the 9th inning. Burton healthy and he is coming in to work the 9th. Burton for the 8th and Coco for the 9th has worked well and I wouldn't want to mess that up. Weathers led the ML's, did he not, in 2 inning saves last season.

July 14, 200818 yr In all seriousness, the smart move was not to bring CoCo in; however, I don't think leaving Weathers in was a good idea. With Burton out, Bray & Lincoln already used & Weathers having thrown an inning already, I think I would've gone to CoCo. Then let Affeldt and/or PeeWee finish it. Sweeping the Brewers and winning 4 in a row headed into the all-star break would have been huge. But I'll take a .500 road trip any day.

If he gets thrown out or Jr strikes out then it's all the same. If Jr gets a basehit + he is on third then they blew it. I know Jr could have gone yard or something but baseball is about playing the odds a lot of times and I think they had a better chance of getting a run in by sending Phillips with 2 outs. Even if he is thrown out then Jr leads off the next inning. I guess that's why I like coaches like Mike Socssia (sp) they manufacture runs and win games.

Mike Sciossa and other managers manufacture runs earlier in the game - not with 2 outs in the 9th. No reason to send Phillips there. With 2 outs, he's running on contact and a base hit would possibly score him. With Jr. at the plate, you don't want to take the bat out of his hands.
