Can Bell Co. be beat?

Featured Replies

I can see a lot of negatives with the kids never playing.

I can see one or two positives, also.

No nasty fundamental habits that have to be broken and the football they are learning is the football you want played.

Bell County has developed a very good little league program and middle school program. But one thing that the high school coaching staff does a great job of is they don't have preconcieved notions of kids before they get to high school.

What I mean is everyone starts out with a clean slate. Just because a kid was quarterback in middleschool does not make him a QB in high school. Coach Hilton does as good of a job as anyone at getting players in the right positions to help the team.

So the kids hadn't played football until they make it to High School? Or do you mean they didn't have a consolidated football team?

Trenches and Rico, I asked this question of a buddy of mine that lives in Bell Co. and has been around the program for quite a while. They began middle school football in the 89 season but did not have a great turnout.

Thanks for digging up some facts. I agree about the difficulty of kids with bad habits, but then I have to disagree with Log Mountain I think some kids with obvious talent are groomed for their position in High School. Some kids are just naturals and some have to really work at it, A good coach mixes and matches those two to build a quality team.

I think more high school coaches would be wise to take the same approach as Coach Hilton.

Getting players in the right position is most of the battle and I agree that Dudley is one of the best when it comes to this. However, his QB is going to be his best athlete which he has shown sense his days at Breathitt and hasn't changed any since then. One of the things that makes Dudley successful is that he keeps everything as simple as it can be and he has a belief about football and he works as hard as anyone towards this belief. Finally, he has a gift to get his players to believe they can do anything and then they go out and do it. Any play or any defense is the right one when the coaches and players believe it is and Dudley has shown this time and time again. He can get the most out of an individual as anyone on the high school level that has ever coached and when you have such a gift everything like X's and O's are secondary. JMHO

I agree very much with that post except for the part about QB. Do you think Nelson was the best athlete on the team the past 4 years?? Probably the smartest and toughest.

I think he was referring to Zachary, as going to be the QB and he is the best athlete.

LB I thought you were talking about his teams in General. You reffered to the Breathitt teams????

Shawn Robbins didn't play QB either. The term "best athlete" and QB doesn't go together all the time by any means at Bell Co more than maybe half the time.

I just think more than not, he puts his best athlete at the QB position. Now this is all subjective and could be argued all day long on each team he has ever coached. Shawn Robbins was a dandy back, the best back on the team perhaps and maybe the best player but that doesn't always mean he was the best athlete? Our thoughts on an athlete could be different also.

Robbins was the best athlete on the team, but he was not the best player. The best player on that team was the FB/LB. I can not think of that kids name.:thumb:

Seems like it was Barton.

I would have to say that Robbins was the best athlete and best player. He was such a great running back and IMO hes the best one Bell Co. has had maybe ever, but in atleast the last 10 years. He ran all over the Highlands team that was an excellent defensive team. His only real weakness at the high school level was he fumbled more than you would like.
