June 26, 200818 yr I'll take your word for it as I haven't been there in a while. All I remember are Hillbilly golf, nick nack shops, and restaurants. My favorite things about Gatlinburg are the outlet shops right outside of town and the hiking.

No, I was referring to nature hiking, but you're right in that there is quite a bit of hiking between stores.
June 26, 200818 yr I'll take your word for it as I haven't been there in a while. All I remember are Hillbilly golf, nick nack shops, and restaurants. You have to get off the beaten path. Granted, it's definitely not for those that crave the night life or urban entertainment. But then again, it never tried to be about that.
June 26, 200818 yr Author So I'm going to Gatlinburg tomorrow. Any suggestions? Drive up to Cades Cove...try to get there before nightfall or right before. It is bout 15-20 minutes out of Pigeon Forge. Once there, follow the sign(s)drive the 11 mile one lane loop around the Cove. You will see more deer in one setting than you ever have. Good chance will see bears and other wildlife. Really neat. Some say you can do the same in the morning as well. Drive the Gatlinburg bypass late in the evening...beautiful views of the G-burg, P-Forge areas. Gotta eat... Old Mill Restaurant...get the corn chowder. Applewood Restaurant...located right before Piegon Forge...connected with the Apple Barn Shops...really really good. Bennett's BBQ is another. If you want to shop...huge, newer outlet mall near entrance into Pigeon Forge. Tanger Outlet Malls. They were working on I-40 near Knoxville when I was there in May, so be prepared.
June 26, 200818 yr LABS - I picked up Dixie Delight based on your recommendation. Very fun read. I laughed out loud when he made fun of the UK mascot wearing overalls and for wearing overalls with only one should strap. The line about expecting him to come out dancing to a Kriss Kross song was really funny.

The line about expecting him to come out dancing to a Kriss Kross song was really funny. It is pretty good...and he is dang straight about Oxford, MS and The Grove. I've been to Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Vandy for SEC games. The Grove is unfreaking believable for tailgating. Blows the others away. Headed to Tuscaloosa for the Bama game this year...should be fun. There are some LOL moments in that book. Still crack up at the idea that LSU fans smell like corn dogs. I was at that game he spoke about...UK at LSU...what a miserable game. Ever read Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer by Warren St. Jean...good one. Another recommendation 'Cane Mutiny by Bruce Feldman, regarding the rise and fall of the Miami Hurricanes. Really good book. Been out for a few years...

June 28, 200818 yr BTW, I'm also reading a book about the Edward Murrow High School chess team in NYC. I know nothing about chess which is immaterial since this book is more of a "year with the team" type book. The school seems fascinating and the book has me interested after the first 3 chapters.
June 28, 200818 yr Terms that I can't stand: "Think outside the box", "Politically correct", "How does that make you feel?", and "Be tolerant". "That's what it's ALL about" I HATE that phrase. As if the essence of ANYTHING could be boiled down to one thing, especially something as inane as THAT!!! :fire: :fire: :fire:

We drove that 11 mile loop yesterday to find a certain hiking path. No shopping for me except for Knife Works today. Overall it was a good time and the night life has to be self created.
