They may have....From everything I've always been told in various history classes and the 2 elections I've been old enough to comprehend, Kentucky has always been a very conservative state.
June 21, 200818 yr Ok...I have what may be a ridiculously stupid idea for McCain. I am sure that my fellow BGP P/R posters will point out my many, many errors in thinking. I think we all know that some of our conservative posters will "hold their nose" and vote for McCain in the fall. Does McCain really need to worry about the conservative vote? They are NOT going to vote for Obama, though some of them may choice NOT to vote. Maybe McCain should focus on the independents (like Rockmom) and the uncommitted democrats (like me). Perhaps he should even choose a democratic running mate, such as Bill Richardson (ok, personal bias - he chooses Richardson and I will definitely vote for him). Maybe he should move to more moderate stances (I know that some of you feel that he couldn't get much more moderate without actually being a democrat). My point is, why should he worry about the conservatives at all? Even if a viable 3rd party candidate emerges, should he even worry about it?

Not only has Kentucky voted for Democrats in the recent past, Obama actually has polled well here- the latest Rasmussen poll for Kentucky shows a VERY competitive race. I would still call McCain a heavy favorite in this state, but Obama is a lot closer than I would have expected. Not for nothing, Obama from the beginimg picked up Dean's 50 state strategy, and his war chest means that McCain and the Republicans have to defend some home turf that they aren't used to protecting.

We argue on here a lot about credentials...no one one else that ran or is still running for the 2008 election holds a candle to him. Here are some of his credentials: governor, secretary of energy, UN ambassador, and long time member of the House of Representatives. During his career in Congress, he dealt a great deal with foreign relations. Even as governor of NM, he has been called upon several times to partake in meetings with foreign goverments. I guess, too, RebelK, that he just seems to stand for a lot the same things I do. I have kept up with him as a governor, as my sister lives in NM and works in city government. I have seen him promote the National Guard, Native American rights, rights of handgun owners, to name a few. You know how you say that there is just something about Obama that feels wrong? Well, to me, there is just something about Richardson that feels right to me. Oh well, there's always 2012! (BTW, let me point out that I know that Richardson has endorsed Obama, so it is "highly unlikely" that he would become McCain's running mate. )

Can moderate Republicans such as McCain and Bush count on the conservative vote because of the left-wingers that the Democrats are supporting? It scares me that us conservatives may lose our voice, if this were the case.
