Since it seems to many Americans that it's Bush's and the evil Republicans fault that gas prices are so high (after all, they're all in bed with Big Oil) and we're not permitted to drill in the areas we know there is oil. What's the answer?

During the campaign of 2006, Pelosi promised to bring down the cost of gas if the Democrats were elected. I'm still waiting....

The price apparently has not yet hit a critical mass with people demanding that something be done. There are hints and an occasional whine but no demands. I don't think we need to lower it until we have a comprehensive energy policy.

 

Where the governement ought to look, if they are adamant about changing the price of fuel is the futures market. That is where oil is bought and sold, not on the open market. check those guys out and set a limit. Outside of that the only thing the government can really do is encourage conservation and I think that is a good thing.

I starting to think that everyone but you and I are in bed with BIG OIL. I don't think that any of them Rep/Dems want to do anything about the oil situation. Perhaps they can't but I find that hard to believe. I just think that everyone of them are getting something put into their grubby little hands.

Ace, you and I are in COMPLETE agreement on the most significant source of the rise in prices. :thumb:

I don't know much about this but I think we need a president/congress that will work toward energy independence in the future. Where hopefully in the next 10 years we can be producing more oil here in the U.S. escpecially in Alaska. A lot of people don't want to do this because of wildlife, environmental stuff, etc. but I think it would provide more U.S. jobs and could get gas back under $3 gallon. I'm not really sure about all this but I think it would help to not have to buy oil from OPEC or atleast not as much oil.

President Bush wanted Congress to pass a bill that allowed for more domestic drilling, more nuclear power plants and programs to allow more research on alternative sources of energy, but the environmentalists shot it down.

We have been working on alternative energy sources since the oil embargo of the 1970's, why are they not producing major results? There has been limited success in this area, why?

When prices went up in the 1970's with the long lines at the gas stations, the go ahead was given by Congress to drill in Alaska. It took a few years, but the price came down. "Drill here, driil now"

I would love to see this become a rallying cry.

People say they don't want to drill in Alaska because it will harm the environment, and they're right it will, but if I have to pick between us or the environment it's an easy call to make.

And that is sad. Drilling in Alaska will only put off the problems we are facing, it will not end them completely. It will harm the environment much longer than it will help us IMO.

1. Drill for more oil (ANWR and off the coast)-if China thinks it's a good idea why don't we?

2. Increase coal-oil research and build those plants.

3. Drill some more- shale oil and tar sands are waiting to tapped.

4. continue to expand renewable - solar, wind, electric

5. Build nuclear plants.

The big thing is big oil is making a TON of money and putting very little into alternative funding. Most of all the profits are going back to the shareholders. Most people view it as... well if im making a ton of money, why would I wanna do something to lower my profits or in this case... find a cheaper alternative source.

 

Dems wanna take a portion of there profits and use it to fund alt sources. I guess theoretically, the more you put into funding the quicker we find a new source.
