June 15, 200818 yr Your posts are confusing. You seem to be switching between the Cincinnati Sean Casey and today's Casey. You make it sound as though no team with Casey at first could ever have won a Championship. In 2004 he had better power numbers than Millar so I'm pretty sure that they'd have been okay with him. If you're just talking about now, if Papi, Schill and Dice-K come back healthy I think the Sox would still have a legitimate shot to win it with him at first. Remember he was the primary firstbaseman for Detroit in their World Series only 2 seasons ago and he hit over .500 for the Series. Hatteberg was the definition of a role player, Casey has been more than that and is better than just a bench player now. While losing Youk or Lowell for an extended period would hurt, I don't think the Red Sox would be forced to make a deal to fill the gap--because of Casey. I guess it is just schemantics but Casey is a bench player that can still play everyday if needed. I guess saying no team would ever win a championship with him is wrong. At one time he put up pretty solid numbers. I don't think he has that ability now and is more limited to being an injury fill in/Bench player. I think that if other teams thought he could play everyday, then they would trade for him. Just my opinion.

June 15, 200818 yr 1. Exactly. They eschewed conventional thinking that had been around for 100 years - just like the "guard the line" thinking. 2. The Red Sox (well one guy) figured out that if you can trash the old school thinking AND have bottomless pockets, you can dominate MLB teams that think you have to draft a guy that "looks good." 3. Who said "Moneyball" failed most teams. Heck, more teams need to go that route. You are starting to see teams draft more college kids especially pitchers than high schoolers.

I agree, this is a big start for Homer. Needs a start like against the Phillies, in which he pitched good enough to win.

They haven't had their everyday lineup together for a single game this series. (Their everyday lineup since Papi went on the DL anyway) That should help Homer out some. This lineup does have quite a bit of speed and it's good to have Tek back in there.
