I've said it before and I'll say again...HOMER BAILEY S NOT A MAJOR LEAGUE STARTING PITCHER!! He is awful. Second straight start he's allowed 5 runs in the first 4 innings.

I take it back.

There are teams that have lots of the right parts available to get production

(The Boston Red Sox) and then, there are teams who wander like lost souls

over the course of 162-games, patching each of their four tires and every

now and then finding a spring to drink from in the wilderness, who don't

have a clue (Cincinnati Reds). This contrast was on display this weekend

in Cincinnati.

 

There always seems to be some major part not functioning properly for

Cincinnati, most of the time it is pitching. But days like Saturday, when you

let the World Series champions off the mat (poor field play; not taking

advantage of the Red Sox missing so many regulars out of their lineup

{Ramirez; Lugo; Veritek; Ortiz}; stranding runners at third with less than

two out {Griffey swings 3-0}; etc.), that 9-0 whoopings are not all that

surprising nor devastating to your "pennant hopes".

 

There probably isn't time to tear down this team and re-build it mid-season

to make for a compelling second half. Sure seems like there would be more

fire from the top (see: Dusty Baker; see: Ozzie Guillien) to tear some butt

and get people motivated, but guys get their AB's; their innings pitched;

their spot in the lineup/on the roster; etc. and that's it.

 

Now that the Bosox have left town (amazing to witness the strong support

the Sox enjoyed at GABP...a la, Steelers games at Paul Brown Stadium),

let's see the next time big crowds roll in to GABP to support the Redlegs.

Don't think it will be happening with '(fill in the blank') Bobblehead Night'

or 'Free (slap Reds logo on novelty item) Night'. Gas prices and re-born

cyncism vs. another losing summer will paint a lot of empty seats at GABP.

 

When the home crowd's biggest motivation is to boo to drown out Red Sox

fans chants (or to boo Homer Bailey off the field, apparently), you're looking

at a long July, August and September in Reds Country. It's too bad.

Mr. Castellini has agreed to spend $$$ to produce a winner, but too many

of his ballplaying employees are letting him down.:sleep:
