According to the Reds' website, it says Wellemeyer is going to start; however, the Cardinals have announced that he will miss his next start and give rookie Mitchell Boggs his first major league start. Wellemeyer has inflammation in his elbow - but may start Thursday against the Reds if Adam Wainwright can't go (strained middle finger). That's the luxury of having Cantu. Would you pick him or Freel???
June 9, 200818 yr That's the luxury of having Cantu. Would you pick him or Freel??? Well, it depends on how much you are going to get to play Cantu. Freel might be the dumbest baseball player in the major leagues but at least you can put him out there in the field in several different manners. And defensively, he ain't going to hurt you. I was listening to Brantley and they were discussing Cantu and said he is a much worse defensive player than E5. So, where in the world was he going to play? I wouldn't want to sit Votto. Seems the Reds have made a commitment to E5. You got Dunn and Griffey on the corners and now Bruce. Have no clue where Cantu was going to play.
June 9, 200818 yr It gives you a lot more leverage with a guy like that on your bench. He can produce as a pinch hitter, super sub and also be there if someone needs a few days off or hits the DL. He would be a much worse 3B than E-5 if we didn't have to call the guy E-5. I would have brought him back over Hatte. Keeping him just didn't make any sense to me...
June 9, 200818 yr Volquez (8-2, 1.32 ERA) has not given up more than two runs in any of his 12 starts, having allowed only 49 hits in 75 innings. His 91 strikeouts and .188 opponent batting average are also tops in the majors. Mark Hendrickson (7-3, 5.33) has an 11.66 ERA in his last three starts. He lost to Volquez at Cincinnati last month after allowing four runs in five innings.
