He definitely wouldn't like how Georgia and I think few other states do it.

 

In Georgia, you play everyone within your region twice and those games count towards seeding. The regions have anywhere from 5-10 teams in them. Then ONLY the top four teams from each region of the eight regions advance to the 32-team playoffs where EVERY round is best 2-out-of-3.

 

So theoretically with five rounds of the playoffs, a team can go 10-5 and win the state title. Guess that would upset him huh?

 

As far as him saying that the district title games don't mean anything, I'll second the notion by The Scribe in saying that he should go to other parts of the state to see how other school systems draw very well for meaningful district tournament finals.

 

One particular instance I can speak of from experience was in 2002 when Rockcastle County was playing Oneida Baptist in the 49th District Finals at Jackson County. There were so many people coming out of the woodworks for OBI that hadn't been to a game in years because their local team had made it to the finals for what I think was the first time in school history. Just because he thinks the sentiment can't be conveyed to the people/fans/players of the NKY area, then that doesn't mean that the rest of the state thinks the same way.

Look at the college level of tournament play, or professional level neither has a one and out. Baseball is a different game than football and basketball. One pitcher can dominate a game. Think, do we want the best teams or the one with a dominating pitcher to win? The region imo should be two and out as well. just like the College WS, Super Regionals and conferance tournaments. I do agree they may need to shorten the season similar to Ohio.

Ryan should make a trip to western Kentucky sometime and watch Hopkinsville and Christian County play for the district title. Or watch Madisonville and Hopkins County Central.

I like the current playoff just for the reason that a team has to have more than one good pitcher. In the past, if a team had one dominant pitcher, he could carry them on his back pretty far. Now teams either need two dominant pitchers, or an offense good enough to make up for the lack of one.

IMO should be done like the Sweet 16 in basketball. Have the winners of each region play. Winner moves on Loser goes home, as simple as that my friend.

I like the current system. It shows a lot more about a team. Pitching depth is something great teams have. The best TEAM doesnt always win when its one and done. In a 3 game series, we see who the better team is in most cases.

With the rising cost of gas can anyone seeing KHSAA possibly changing the format of the playoff system? There are teams that are taking a bus for 2 - 2 1/2 hours to play ONE game and then on top of that they could do that 3 nights in a row plus paying an entry fee for the parents and students (6 and under are free) at the amount of $7 for semi-state.

 

I don't have a problem with the set up but I do think changes need to be made where the teams are going to be playing closer to home.

How many games can a college world series winner lose in the post season and still be national champs? The format is fine. The best TEAM will most likely win. If the schedule is a burden, I would suggest Mr Ernst find something else to do.

Apparently Alan Stein (owner of Lexington Legends) has been pushing the KHSAA for a combined, 16-team state tournament to be held at Applebee's Park. His goal is for it to be similar to the basketball tournaments.

 

The games would be played:

-Four first Round games on Monday and four more on Tuesday.

-No scheduled games on Wednesday, but could be used in case of rain

-Four quarterfinal games on Thursday

-Two semifinal games on Friday

-Championship game on Saturday

I like semi-state, best of 3. A three game series winner is a better indicator of who's the better team than a 1 and done. I don't like the district tournament where the runner up advances. Just eliminate the district tournament completely and go straigt to region. If you win your district in the regular season you go to regional tournament. You come in second in your district, you stay home. Two way tie, heads up winner advances. Three way tie, runs allowed, then run differential, then runs scored in the heads up games played by the three teams. Region has 4 teams, make it double elimination. Keep the semi-state and 8 team single elimination finals as is.

At first glance, it would put smaller programs at a disadvantage Pitching wise. In this scenario, you would have to win 4 games in one week and not many, would have the pitching depth to achieve. Some of your larger schools, could have the depth to play at this high quality level.

 

You would see a lot of Monday and Friday, or Tuesday/Saturday pitchers on the arms. I do like the concept of more teams, just not sure playing in one week, is feasible for all the programs that would advance.

I like your thinking!! Maybe you eliminate district tournaments all together. Advance the regular season district champion straight to regionals. Reward the teams that get it done week in & week out. Seeding means nothing in district tournaments, so your record is meaningless. Just look at CAL. Can you say "Sand Bag" ???
