McCain: U.S. can win Iraq war within 4 years

Featured Replies

I just can't understand why so many people don't realize that the above statement refers to the overthrow and defeat of Saddam Hussein, his government, his military and his system.

Three times in the past few days math has referred to those who disagree with him as stupid or silly. I must be at the top of the list.

So was this the mission? Was this the war? Or is there more?

Personally, I liken the situation in Iraq to China taking us over and telling us how we should live. I don't think we'd like it either. We had no business in Iraq and now we are reaping the disasters from it that are going to last for a long long time.

If I were living under a repressive dictator who could haul my butt off to be tortured in prison for any reason while his sons raped my female relatives, and China overthrew this dictator while helping me set up a form of government that gave me freedom and liberty, then I would say bring it on, China!

So was this the mission? Was this the war? Or is there more?

The mission was to remove the threat that was Hussein and his government. We could have declared victory at that moment, turned around and came home and let Iraq go to Hell. I'm not sure that wouldn't have been the right course in retrospect, but we are a humanitarian nation.

Folks love to twist and spin things around to fit their partisan beliefs. The attack on Bush for saying "mission accomplished" is one of those occurrences. Bush said the mission of major combat operations in Iraq was accomplished and it has been.

We are not and have not been engaged in major combat operations in Iraq since his speech, at least as this former Marine understands the term "major combat operations".

Attached is a link to the text of his speech if you doubt me (not that I think your reading of it will result in any less unfair and partisan comments emanating from your computer): http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/05/01/iraq/main551946.shtml

Oh and by the way, Bush didn't promise that the rest of our time in Iraq was going to be like a walk through the garden. He said the job of securing and reconstructing Iraq would be difficult.

Criticize him all you want as that's your right, but try to be fair in your criticism.:D

I thought we won the war... I am confused

Not confused, just uninformed.:D

These guys will say whatever it takes to get votes but the bottom line is if the USA continues to go about it the way we are we will never win.

LN, thanks for the link. It renews my pride in our military and reminds us of the job they did.

NCF, short of unleashing the might of the US military upon these people and bringing about almost total destruction, there may not be a way to actually "win". We are trying to establish a peace and security that allows the fledgling Iraqi government a chance to develop and to settle their differences. However, although as President Bush said, we won the military conflict, it will eventually come down to the Iraqi people to decide what type of government they want. The unfortunate truth is that it may not be the democracy that we have wished for them.

That right there is what kills our military. Peacekeeping is the pits. Anytime we send our military in, they should be told to go in, kick butt and get out. Let the "enemy" pick up their own pieces.

Major combat operations is when they are shooting at me. Minor skirmishes are when they are shooting at you.;)

For what it's worth, we won the Iraq war five years ago. If East and West Germany had fought a civil war in 1947 would that mean we lost WWII? With that said, we made a mess that we don't know how to clean up. Next time, let's hope we have a President with the good judgement not to make the mess in the first place. Obama 08.

He'll certainly make a mess of this country.

You're right. Rush Limbaugh used to say that the purpose of the military was to kill people and break things. Now apparently it is to keep the Shiites from killing the Sunnis.

That I will agree with...and on here, it usually seems to come more from one side than the other. :sssh:

You speak with the certainty of psychic, James Van Prague. How can you be so certain?

I've listened to him speak. You don't need to be psychic, you just have to listen.
