I've always found the concept of "melting pot" to be a funny one. We're much more of a "tossed salad" in this country anymore, with most immigrants seemingly so concerned about not losing their home country's heritage that they never bother to assimilate into this one. There's very little blending going on.

That's just stupid. Since they were kids I wouldn't exactly place them in a terrorist cell just yet, but they were ignorant brats. VERY different situation than the kid who brought the flag in his gym class and got it thrown away, which I would side with him, but not those punks.

I hope those kids get their butts kicked, If this would have happened in my old mans generation they would have gotten beat down on the spot. A big surprise it happened in the arm pit of America: California.

If what you say is true, how come all the Germany, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Itatian, etc, etc immigrants children learned to speak English? Not to mention people of Spanish heritage in previous generations.

In the post by HHSDad I think you can see that it was once a "melting pot", JimSchue makes the point that it seems less like a melting pot these days than in previous generations as you do. Let's face it, we have Native Americans, Japanese Americans, African Americans, and so on ad nauseum, to the point that there are no longer just Americans.

This reminds of of a line from the new Adam Corolla movie coming out, "The Hammer". His best friend in the movie is from Nicaragua and a bunch of them are all sitting around watching a Nicaraguan soccer game cheering and going nuts. Then Corolla says "You guys sure do seem to love Nicaragua except for the part where you risked your lives not to live there any more." :lol: It cracks me up every time I hear it.

I like the line in the movie Selena where her father says we're not American enough for the Americans and we're not Mexican enough for the Mexicans.

Is it possible he had a love for his new homeland? He may have had a dislike for the leadership of the land of his birth, but could have had a love of the country he left.

What they did wasn't a practical joke, it was out and out disrespect for the United States. They go to school on US tax money, and then disrespect this country? I don't think so. Expel them and let their parents homeschool them.

I disagree. When you remove the flag and replace it with underwear, all you have is a pole with underwear on it. Without the flag, a pole loses it's symbolism.

 

However, when you replace it or fly another flag above the US flag, you are flying the flag of a foreign country on US soil and placing it above the US flag in status. Quite a difference actually.

 

I can see your point in this. Being a HS teacher though, I deal with a lot of irrational behaviors. I have a lot of student make immature mistakes that may NOT illustrate who they are, but more related to how they feel. Surely those of you that have teenagers experience the same thing. Had the same situation occurred with adults as the instigators, then I would have been harsher in my condemnation.
