RTS, apparently it's a progressive "hurt". The ones who are hurting the worst right now are the ones on the lower end of the wage scale. As always, those with better means may be making small cuts, those with even better means may have made no cuts. .....And then some people refuse to believe there could be any problem and continue as before. ......And some people are beginning to make their changes before they feel the pinch.

I agree BUT the gas that is still in the tanks is cheaper for them two days ago compared to next week! I guess we are giving them a bigger profit! Oh well still have to have it!

 

In the past it had offeset itself as sometimes they would buy gas at 1.99(fictional amounts) and it would drop to 1.79 the next day. Other days it would go from 1.99 to 2.19. So if they are making profits on one end, they are losing their shirt on the other.

 

Although it certainly does seem that the days the prices drop are few and far between anymore, it still doesn't stop gas stations from buying (and losing their shirts) when it does. The only difference now...........the stakes are much higher (due to higher gas prices) and minor mistakes are forcing owners to think about closing their doors.

I talked to a friend who works at a gas station and he said it is set up so that they never lose money on gas. I will take his word on this being he works in that department.

The gas prices are certainly hurting me. I have to drive from Richmond to Versailles at least once a week, and then we usually have a show every weekend somewhere in the Central KY area that I have to drive to. Now that school has let out, I won't be driving as much to school, but I will be driving to and from work.

 

I have an older SUV that doesn't get great gas mileage (I can't help it, it's the car I could afford and I am in no position to get a new car or hybrid).

 

On top of the price of gas hitting my wallet, everything else is going up too. I recently ordered something online that I have ordered from before and their shipping and handling charges have doubled since the last time I used them.

 

Just went to the store tonight as well and got the usual groceries that we always get and the bill was almost $100 more than just a few months ago. I'll admit I got some things I don't normally get, like a printer cartridge and allergy medicine, but other than those items which added up to no more than $35, that's $65 more than what we were paying for pretty much the same groceries a few months ago.

 

Several of my friends who are in college are now looking for summer jobs and one that I know of is looking for something she can walk or bike to. Being in Richmond, it used to be common for many of us to commute to Lexington for work (because there's more jobs there) but now, we are all trying to stay as close to home as we can.

 

I, for one, only go 65-70 on the highway to try and save on my gas mileage. I know it's better to go slower, but trying to go under 65 mph on I-75 is impossible unless you want to be run off the road.

 

I really hope something changes soon, or the money I'm trying to save for next fall's school semester is all going to go to gas.

You sound like me if I were still in school. I Graduated RIGHT ON TIME last December, otherwise there'd be no way I'd be able to afford next semester.

 

RTS, a lot of people are cutting back to be able to spend on gas, but as you're well aware a lot of people are just stupid and think that all that debt will magically go away, or at least they don't worry about it.

 

But if you think about it, it's really not surprising to see just as many cars on the road. They're all making cuts in other areas so they CAN drive around as usual because it's such an important factor in our lives. Also a lot of people might be getting multiple jobs which means they'd be driving around MORE often.

 

Also, I used to be one of those people who were like "Why are these people driving SUV's?" As it turns out, like Aiden Seamus up there, it was the best vehicle I could afford that would last me any amount of time. I'd LOVE to buy a Hybrid for the same price, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Ok, I know the economy is in a really bad slump and I’m not any happier with gas prices than the rest of you, but…

I’ve noticed a few things that just don’t jive with all the rumblings. I don’t see any evidence that people are really as upset or hurting like they claim they are. I drive to and from work and don’t see less traffic from carpooling (lots of cars with one occupant); people pass me while I’m doing 65 mph the same as they have for years, I've seen no sign of people slowing down to increase gas mileage. I look at the area restaurants and shopping malls and see parking lots just as full as in the past and when I go shopping myself I don't notice people just browsing and not buying any less than before. What gives? If things are so bad, why aren’t people showing it?

Opinions anyone?

 

I don't think the Northern Kentucky area is a very good guage of what's going on statewide and nationwide. The NoKy economy has shown itself to be relatively bullet-proof over the past 20 years of explosive growth.

 

And with more cake-eaters per capita in NoKy than anywhere else in the state (except maybe Oldham County), there are too many people who have to show off for their neighbors for there to be any drop-off of conspicuous consumption. I believe folks from the country call the phenomena "puttin' on airs."

Don't you guys know how it works in the USA, you pay the minimum on your many,many credit cards for years and years until they are maxed out,then file for bankrupcy and get on food stamps.Does anyone know exactly how bankrupcy works, there's people in our neighborhood that have filed twice, have had cars repossesed and still get another car and live quite well. Seems to be the American way. Have you been in a store or restaurant at the first of the month, absolutely unbelievable. Gas prices will never ever affect these many people, who also continue to pay 30 dollars for a carton of cigarettes.

I guess 30 dollars is alot better than most states.

I don't hear any body complaining about paying 4 dollars a gallon for milk!

I think things are harder on younger couples that have kids that do not have descent jobs. A lot of these kids cannot make it check to check so they will get credit cards to help them get by. I am not saying I agree with it I am just saying its out there.

I only pay 2.50 for milk.Every Sunday Walmart and or Meijer always seem to have it at that price.
