I do not think that many high schools run the same exact schemes for years and years in a row, a great example of that is HHS, every couple of years they change their offense to suit their strengths. Remember about 3 years ago they ran the jet sweep, few years before that the shotgun spread and threw the ball all over the place. My point is that those kids learning the "system" in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade had to learn something new and they were still successful.

doubledeuce, I think the benefit is more along the lines of terminology. If a "shoot" is a MLB blitz in JR High and in high school, and a stab is a SLB blitz in both, it will be beneficial. I did the same thing in JFL. I did not run the spread in JFL, that would be crazy, but I did use the same terminology, which made my players, and me, look like football whizzes when my players went to JR High and High School, because the coaches would ask questions and the players knew the terminology.

Just curious, what do you think the % is of football players at CovCath that live in Boone County?

I know that Covcath always gets multiple kids from Boone County. Each year, there are many kids who are Catholic and want to play football. Since St. Henry does not have a program, they make the trip to Park Hills. I know on this coming year's team there will be at least six kids from Boone County.

I agree, if the varsity coaches are active in either coaching the JR high or at least coach the coaches of the Jr High, this will be a win win for CovCath. That is the way Raceland does it, and the JR high learns the structure and terminology of the varsity before they are freshmen, it gives them a head start.

Its such a booming area and I look for Grant County to be the next boom spot when the economy recovers. With all those kids further south, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a non-public school open in the Boone County area. Not sure if the Diocese will let another Catholic high school open in N. Ky because of its concern of the effect on the existing ones, but a Christian academy wouldn't surprise me at all. I would think the number would be few and far between.

 

I get the feeling many feel Boone students are propelling CovCath to football success. While no doubt they help, if the 10% number is correct, that works out to 2 starters.

DD, your exactly right because coaches have to adjust to the athletes they have but I promise HHS has a core system (offensive and defensive) they run and adjust from there. All I was saying is the kids at the junior high level would be running the same type of system as the varsity.

In addition, it may not draw a ton of kids there way, but, you can bet, it would draw 4-5 good, solid players a class, or 12-15 kids in the top 3 grades. That may not put them at the T and X stage, but, you have to believe 12-15 additional quality athletes would definately make them stronger and deeper and more competitive with the bigger and better programs. Then, if it is successful and the program does begin to show improvement, those #s will certainly grow and thus they'll continue to improve each year. This will not put Beechwood, Highlands, Ryle, NCC and the like out of business, by any means, but, it definately won't help them either..

I believe they are talking about a Middle School league which I believe to only include 7th and 8th grades. I could be wrong. I'm not Catholic and maybe that means K thru 12 but in my book it doesn't. That means they will be only learning CC style for 7th and 8th grade. Still better than it has been. :thumb:

Well I am, and as far as I know, a middle school league is just that -- a middle school league.

On one good note for the Middle school league starting at Cov Cath. The 6th, 7th, and the 8th graders that want to play for the NKYFL, but can not make the weight limit. They will finally have a place to play football now. That is great for those youngmen. Good Luck CCHS!!

The reason I say club is because from what I understand is that they will be made up of kids from 3 or 4 schools. In the past these middle school teams would not even scrimmage teams outside of their own league. I think that they were limited by liability issues in regards to insurance.

 

Also, is it true that before the season starts all coaches have to submit their playbooks to all the other coaches in the league? The league only allows a 5-3 defense with no blitzing, is that true? A response to these questions from some one who knows for sure would be great.

Beechwood has had 7/8th graders on there Freshman team for decades.

I'm not sure how this works in Northern Kentucky, but in North-Eastern Kentucky almost all the JR High teams are school affiliated. For instance at Raceland, and many of the surrounding schools that I am aware of, our insurance will not allow us to play non-school affiliated teams. Example: until a couple years ago, Fairviews JR High team was ran through the Westwood Boys Club, we could not play them at that time.
