Harang's contract is worth more than what he can bring in for him. You don't sign guys like that for that amount of money everyday. Look what Big Z got paid and he is no better than Harang.

And if Harang starts to show some wear and tear from working nearly 700 innings the last three seasons, then what?

 

Oakland got Dan Haren and Daric Barton for Mark Mulder.

 

Arizona got a young minor league centerfielder named Chris Young for Javier Vazquez.

 

Florida got a young minor league pitcher named Dontrelle Willis for Matt Clement.

 

Deals like that can be done, if you have the right scouting and such in place, and Harang may have more value than any of those three pitchers had at the time of their deals.

 

I didn't say trade Harang for anything specific. I said only that it wouldn't hurt to explore his worth on the market.

But only Wainwright, Edmonds and Rolen were part of the World Series Title. Jocketty is good but Epstein acquired Ortiz, Schilling, Crisp, Lowell, Beckett, Lugo, Drew, Matzusaka, Okijima etc. Actually, Cashman has managed to acquire Matsui, Damon, Abreu, A-Rod, Chamberlain, Pettitte etc. The Cards got lucky and rode a hot steak to a Title. There are better GMs, serveral a lot better, and with better resources than WJ.

Matsui and Damon were expensive free agent signees. Chamberlain and Pettitte came up through the Yankees' system, and Pettitte was reacquired as a free agent.

 

The same with the Red Sox and most of the guys you mentioned.

 

The Jocketty example was all about trades. There is a difference.

 

All of those guys that Jocketty brought to St. Louis helped keep the Cardinals in contention for more than a decade ... the guy did a heck of a job with the Cardinals, and I'm no Cardinals fan.

 

When have the Reds had a guy that has done better?

We have to have the worst hitting OF in baseball for average right now.

Blow up the OF situation and put Bruce in RF, Hopper in CF and E-5 in LF. Keppy at 3rd, Gonzo at SS, BP at 2B and Votto at 1st. With Dunn and JR gone, there is plenty to spend on the rest of the roster...

 

I agree with some, but how do you rebuild with Alex Gonzalez. Also, I would keep Burton, Bray, and Affeldt for sure but can't rebuild with them...maybe keep one of those three, but get rid of A-Gon and it's good

Hollow argument to trade probably the best player in baseball in 2-3 years. Each organization has certain players that should be untouchable, and he clearly should have been it. As everyone else has pointed out they haven't truely replaced him and probably will not find a talent like that for another 10-20 years.

 

If he was a Red Sox right now he would be leading them to the world series along with Manny's always consistent bat.

 

And NO I would not trade Bruce under any circumstance. 1 possible playoff run is not worth drafting a kid, bringing him into your system, and passing up on 10 years of all star stats for one playoff run, that may turn in to a WS.

 

Yankee's tried trading all their prospects and there currently banking on guys like Mike Mussina. No thanks.

 

I have got to agree with AverageJoesGym. With the aging Big Papi, Manny, and Schilling, when you go after Beckett and Lowell, and give up a prospect, but you win a championship, that is good. If the Reds traded Bruce for Verlander and Carbera of the Tigers, would you have a problem with the trade if the Reds won a championship? I would not, no matter how good Bruce got.

 

It is all about championships, not winning in the regular season for years and not getting a championship, and certainly not about stats.
