Is Political Correctness censorship??

Featured Replies

It seems like everytime I turn on the news one group or the other is demanding an apology from another because they have said something UN-PC.

I believe in free speech..I may not agree with what you say and I may even be OFFENDED by it,but you have a right to say it. And what's MORE you have a right to believe it!

In my opinion Political Correctness is nothing more than veiled censorship.

Thoughts?

People just need to put on their big boy pants and get over most of this stuff.

People can say whatever they want. Doesn't mean that they are immune to the backlash for it being out of line.

Agreed.

No, of course political corectness isn't censorship. Censorship is examining things for the purpose of removing that which is objectionable. Political correctness takes place prior to that, forcing people to think about what they say before they even say it. Call it what you will, but it isn't censorship.

BTW, chances are, if there were no concept of Political Correctness, clowns like Don Imus and Bill Maher wouldn't say the things they do, or have the ratings that they do.

Agreed.

The way you describe it, it sounds to me like Political Correctness ought to be practiced more often.

I think things would be a lot better if people thought about what they were saying and how it effects those who receive it. It doesn't mean the thought is wrong but the delivery might be.

Agreed. But look at the language in your sentence. It means that "I" ought to think about "my own speech". No arguments.

But PC seeks to shout down (verbally and legally) OTHER PEOPLE'S speech.

HUGE difference.

I'm not for "PC". I'm just stating that dialogue would be a lot more possible in any realm of life if people "think" about what he or she is about to say and if the method and delivery chosen is really achieving the ends we want in stating what we believe.

For example, Maher should have thought about how his thoughts about the Pope and the Catholic church would be received before chosing satire and vitriolic speech as his foil. The way he spoke tells you he isn't interested in helping the situation or correcting the wrongs he sees but in slamming people.

Politically correct, IMO, is another way of saying polite, civilized, gracious.

To some extent I agree but on some I don't.

Illegal alien vs. undocumented visitor is a great example. The first is very unPC but it is true. However the PC police have decided it may be hurtful so we have the second.

PC IMVHO is many time used as a way to disguise the true nature of a person or persons.

Political correctness is the veil that hides how people really feel.

Though I respect your opinion, I disagree with it completely. I believe that it disguises what some BELIEVE is the true nature of a person or persons. In your example, an illegal alien/undocumented vistor is MUCH more than someone where they are not supposed to be. He is or she is a human being, likely with a family, with hopes and dreams and with positive (and negative) qualities. He or she may be illegal, but that is not WHO they are.
