Is Political Correctness censorship??

Political correctness is the veil that hides how people really feel.

Glad I don't follow this! :lol::lol::lol:

Political correctness is the veil that hides how people really feel.
"Often I must speak other than I think. That is called diplomacy."

Anyone recognize the quote without google?

What about this one:

"Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naïve, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as 'empty,' 'meaningless,' or 'dishonest,' and scorn to use them. No matter how 'pure' their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best."

Hint: both from science fiction.

My mom taught me that tact/diplomacy/political correctness is called manners.

Here's what's wrong with the American society today: Everybody thinks that everyone else's business is their business; that freedom of speech means that are thrown manners by the wayside; that being honest means that it's ok to be hurtful, derogatory and ugly, and that the person being hurt just needs to "get over it".

Though I respect your opinion, I disagree with it completely. I believe that it disguises what some BELIEVE is the true nature of a person or persons. In your example, an illegal alien/undocumented vistor is MUCH more than someone where they are not supposed to be. He is or she is a human being, likely with a family, with hopes and dreams and with positive (and negative) qualities. He or she may be illegal, but that is not WHO they are.

But they are breaking the law and therefore illegal so yes, that is who they are.

When I was in college (before turning 21) and I bought adult beverages I was breaking the law, plain and simple. I was an illegal drinker. I guess the PC version of that would be age deficient consumer.

But they are breaking the law and therefore illegal so yes, that is who they are.

You miss the point. That is not WHO they are. That is just a facet of who they are. That's the problem with labels. They are way too deficient to define who a person is.

It seems like everytime I turn on the news one group or the other is demanding an apology from another because they have said something UN-PC.

I believe in free speech..I may not agree with what you say and I may even be OFFENDED by it,but you have a right to say it. And what's MORE you have a right to believe it!

In my opinion Political Correctness is nothing more than veiled censorship.

Thoughts?

Agree totally.

To some extent I agree but on some I don't.

Illegal alien vs. undocumented visitor is a great example. The first is very unPC but it is true. However the PC police have decided it may be hurtful so we have the second.

PC IMVHO is many time used as a way to disguise the true nature of a person or persons.

Excellent example, All Tell. To describe somebody as an illegal immigrant or an illegal alien is simply associating a criminal act with the perpetrator. For the sake of consistency, maybe we should start describing bank robberies as undocumented cash advances.

(And yes, I am comparing illegal immigrants to bank robbers. Both groups break our laws and steal services to which they are not entitled. The difference is that bank robbery has not been deemed politically correct.)

If I have to stop and think about what I say in order to keep from being hurtful or to be diplomatic in as far as beginning a dialogue, then that is manners.

If I have to stop and think about what I say in order to conform to the status quo because I know that I will be hung out to dry because of what I truly believe, then that in itself is a form of censorship. Why? Because other people who may believe as I do will no longer speak up for fear of the same repercussions...THAT is my point.

By the way...I like the dialogue on here..we may disagree, but we seem to be discussing it civily!!! Also my point!

Political correctness is the veil that hides how people really feel.
