You're saying that the people who SIGNED A LEGAL CONTRACT shouldn't live up to their end of it? IT SPECIFICALLY said that if they recieved a court settlement then they would have to pay the money recieved from the insurance back. If they didn't read it, or have their attorney look over it then it's their own fault, not Wal-Mart nor the insurance company.

 

 

That's what's wrong with America today, everyone wants to be felt sorry for and wants to get a break from people. Whether it's getting out of tickets, waiving late fees on bills or whatever, no one wants to take their own responsibilty for their actions. People need to deal with it and move on. Read the fine print and read it again before you sign any kind of insurance documents.

All these people whine and cry about putting Mom and Pop's out of business. Well mom and pop's wouldn't go out of business if the customers still shopped there, its not Wal Marts fault, its the consumer who shops at Wal-Mart. All thats happened is Wal Mart has provented these "mom and pops" from gouging the consumer. We've all seen these "mom and pop" gas stations in these rural areas charging 20 or 30 cents more a gallon...Why? Because they can cause there's no competion....Wal-Mart ended all that. I worked at Wal-Mart for over 2 years in college, it helped me pay the bills and they provide goods at a competitive price.If you don't like it, don't shop there!!!

 

I don't think the mom and pop's gouge as much as Wal-Mart negotiates with the manufacturer (or simply finds a cheaper look alike product from China when available) because of the number of stores they operate. I would think Wal-Mart actually has a higher gross margin than the mom and pop (which is why the Walton's are on Forbes and mom and pops are not).

Yes, like anything in the world, its cheaper to buy in volume...and mom and pops aren't on Forbes list because they aren't business savy like a Sam Walton was...

You know if all of the people that bemoan the harm that WalMart does to mom and pops actually shopped at mom and pops they wouldn't be hurting.

You are correct about Sam Walton. I just wanted to add that because mom and pop are 20-30 cents higher they may not be gouging, they may actually be making less than Wal-Mart. Just not big enough to buy it at the same price.

Do I personally? No. BUT they signed it, they have to be responsible for the consequences. There are more things they, ask for donations, anything. As I said before from a personal side it's a horribly sad story but from the legal side it's nothing but their own fault. Their lawyer is also to blame. It's a complicated situation and Wal-Mart did a good thing.

From the way the original article read I thought that there was nothing about double compensation but I could be wrong. It made it seem as though Wal-Mart wiping out all of the funds that were left. But I do feel that Wal-Mart felt forced in to doing this to avoid the bad publicity.

 

Thats where the article was misleading. She would have gotten double compensation because her insurance paid the bills originally and she would have gotten money for the bills from the insurance company and then money for the same bills from the lawsuit judgment. Thus she would have gotten money from two different places for the same thing.

Would a small "mom and pop" have passed on collecting $400,000 to which they were legally entitled to be reimbursed? I think not. The plaintiff's lawyer was at fault in this case - not Wal-Mart.

I still believe whole-heartedly that Wal-Mart will be the downfall of modern civilization!

What about the $20 million that Walmart contributed for Katrina relief? Or the loads of supplies they delivered to hurricane devasted areas before FEMA even showed up?

You would be surprised how minimal the mark up is on some of Wal-Mart's products.

So your company just needed the write off? No other reason? I can tell you from personal experience that they regularly give to many small local groups without receiving any publicity at all. Ones that I have worked with who benefited include boy scouts, girl scouts, school booster clubs, school bands and a boys group.

There is an excellent documentary made a few years ago called "The High Cost of Low Prices." I highly recommend viewing it. If only because not only do they present the case against in an unbiased way, but because Wal-Mart actually responds in the film and they present both sides of the argument. It's very balanced, but the conclusion is somewhat clear.

Yes, Wal-Mart donates Millions every year. I know when I worked at Wal-mart, and there were fundraisers in front of the store for IE girl scouts, car-washes and stuff, they match what you make, which is good. All companies strive to be like Wal-Mart. Other companies are ALWAYS trying to steal there Management. Once you've worked in management at Walmart, any company will hire you. IF it wasn't wal-mart, it'd be some other company doing, it like Target or Mejer, etc.
