Cigarettes and alcohol are worse.

So, because we have allowed to worse things in our society, we should allow new things that are bad?

LBBC, whats wrong with letting the people vote on this?

I have already stated what could be an objection to a popular vote several times in this thread.

I used the prohibition part of our history as one example. The lawmakers bowed to the popular vote of the people and prohibited alcohol. Was that right or wrong?

I used the example of gasoline taxes and the view that if you put it up to a popular vote, the people would get rid of gasoline taxes that I think are used for upkeep of roads. Should be put that to a popular vote?

Should they put to a vote the idea of a marriage between one woman and one man?

Should they put to a vote whether Christianity should be the national religion?

It's not like there aren't already avenues for people to gamble very close by. The issue in my mind is that there are millions of Kentucky dollars being used to fund programs in other states while we our legislators are debating what to cut. That's backward thinking. The money IS going to be spent, it may as well help our state.

And just like prohibition, if expanded gaming proves to be that bad then it could be repealed.

My argument isn't 'Those other guys were speeding, too.' My argument is 'Why do we want to make it illegal to go 5 miles an hour over the speed limit, but not 10?'

I can understand and appreciate this thought process. And you are right in a lot of regards. Simply, I think the societal negatives outweigh the economic positives you list here.

This is a testament to the level of incompetence in Frankfort. Instead of creating progress, they merely bicker and sabotage one another. Beshear has also backed himself into a corner with his proposed cuts to education, which I believe he is now forced to renege on.

I think I have addressed this in previous topics. It preys on the poor and puts a strain on already strained budgets. It hurts the family unit. It is not a good way to generate income. I don't have the time to rehash every issue. Besides, these are my opinions. However, they are shared by many other people. I am no hypocrite because I think it all needs to go. You may not agree with me but at least I am consistent.;)

I respect your opinion, so please don't think I was trying to imply anything. I just don't happen to agree with your reasoning. I'm of the opinion that people make choices to do the things they do. Whether those choices are good or bad, are of their own choosing. I'm not a gambling person myself, outside of a weekly football card during the NFL season, so even if it does end up happening, I would choose to not participate. However, I would vote in favor of it should it come to vote.

The State of Indiana is CLEANING UP on Casino revenue. They seem to have all their moraly fibers intact.

My argument isn't 'Those other guys were speeding, too.' My argument is 'Why do we want to make it illegal to go 5 miles an hour over the speed limit, but not 10?'

And I would go back to my point that the argument is not whether we want to allow those two things or not. The single issue being debated is casino gambling.

I agree that those two things cause horrible problems in our society, but the debate is not about those things.

It is whether we want to have casino gambling or not.

But those societal negatives are already available. This hasn't prevented anything other then Kentucky dollars staying in Kentucky.

And I have listed on other threads, there has been economic problems associated with states that have added casinos to their state.

It is not just a moral issue for those that are opposed to it.

I hope they do! No need for gambling of any kind IMO.

Kinda of a personal question here so you can PM me but does not the redhounds receive money from the Bingo halls?
