March 28, 200818 yr I think there is some debate if slavery was put to a vote before the Civil War, keeping it might have passed also. It was the unequal force of Southern representation (which we still see today, incidentally) and their obstructionist tactics in Congress that caused the Civil War. The North was so sick of it that for years their votes tended more and more towards any other outcome, and the South was so used to it that when their coalition failed at last to secure a President they agreed with, they declared themselves independent of the Union; this eventually brought about their own defeat. A nice, applicable lesson about clinging to the norms of the past, I think.

March 28, 200818 yr On topic, I find the result disappointing, and agree that the result is hypocritical in the face of continued gambling in the state. If you believe that gambling preys on the poor and stupid, forcing bad decisions, then you should find the lottery worst of all. The truth is, while there is some passionate and principled opposition from people like lbbc (we disagree, but I at least respect his feelings) most of the casino antagonism stems from a desire to see the budget fail under a Democratic governor cleaning up the mess left behind by the one lone term of an incompetent.

I can understand why you would feel the way you do on the last part. I just want to point out that I do not feel this way. I do understand and appreciate and can even agree with the economic ideas behind using casinos as a revenue stream, I think the economic positives are outweighed by the societal negatives.
March 28, 200818 yr Is that similar to sticking with those things in the past that the Founding Fathers put forward? I've always found the odd ancestor worship of the Founding Fathers a little foolish. They were, shockingly, mortal men who made mistakes- in this thread you celebrated the end of one of their most heinous. The fact that they created a government which worked mostly then and works mostly now (although bearing very, very little resemblance to their original plan) is a minor miracle, especially since they were navigating without a map. But it's no accident that democracies formed after ours, including democracies we helped create, function not at all like American democracy.
March 28, 200818 yr Rather the question was should new gambling outfits be allowed. The answer to that has been no.We will not (for now) know what the answer to that has been. The question was not allowed to be asked. Apparently, some legislators are of the opinion that their constituents are too stupid to be trusted with any kind of major decision. These are the kind of politicians we don't need.

I started a thread a few years back challenging their idolized status. It was an interesting debate and one person even made the comment he liked to believe that they were divinely influenced.

Apparently, some legislators are of the opinion that their constituents are too stupid to be trusted with any kind of major decision. These are the kind of politicians we don't need. So, should every decision that the lawmakers make come to us as a vote or are they supposed to represent our views by their election from us into that body? I thought that was the reason they are there. To represent my views and the views of others in my district and make decisions that represent those views. And as I pointed out, sometimes the view is going to be popular but be wrong. Many would bring up the prohibition issue. The lawmakers gave into the popular view at the time and allowed the vote to be taken. Few years later they were able to rectify that mistake of bowing to the popular vote.
March 28, 200818 yr Why not? I think I have addressed this in previous topics. It preys on the poor and puts a strain on already strained budgets. It hurts the family unit. It is not a good way to generate income. I don't have the time to rehash every issue. Besides, these are my opinions. However, they are shared by many other people. I am no hypocrite because I think it all needs to go. You may not agree with me but at least I am consistent.

Thank God we have a government that tells me how to spend my money, and protects me from my own ignorance.
