I think the biggest thing with Hopson, is he gets bored playing against guys in High School that don't challenge him. He lacks a little bit of that killer instinct to just punish anyone against him, but that typically comes with age and maturation. He has as much ability as anyone. He is getting accolades as a top player in the country someone sees something.

 

As far as defense and rebounding, to me that is the coaches fault. I am sure the last thing that the UHA coach wants is for him to be in foul trouble. Watching him reminds me of watching Rickie Farmer play defense in the sweet 16. He didn't.

Please don't attempt to lecture me, on what talent and lazy is. I'm not interested and fully capable of forming my own opinions, based off observations. This young man, represented Kentucky in the McDonald's All-American game and yet, some of you still look to find only the negative.

I dont think many people will deny the ability he has, but the "want to" he has. College coaches see the ability, and believe they can be the one to get the effort out of him. Coaches are arrogant like that, and we all know that. I'm not saying they cant do it, as I hope someone does.

I'll try to translate for you guys. By "sorry", LMB means that the kid is just flat out lazy. He looks like he doesnt care except for when he has the ball in his hands. He may have had games during the year where he goes all out a little more, but when he has come to this part of the state that just hasnt been the case.

 

You guys can laugh and go on all you want, but the fact of the matter is when Hopson has been around Lexington he hasnt played hard at all. He will get his points. I can admit and LMB will as well that Hopson can get by anyone he wants at any time during the game, its just a matter of him wanting to. He never wants to play defense though. He will get some boards, but when it comes to guarding someone he relies on his natural abilities more than he does effort, which is a lot of what defense comes down to.

 

Yes S3, you can be talented and lazy. It is very possible. I would have thought you would know that? If you cant admit he is as lazy as he is talented I have to wonder about what games you are watching when Hopson is playing in high school. Notice I am excluding AAU from all of this as I have not seen him play an AAU game.

I just wish all of these people would get off of his back. Look at the thread title for heaven sakes, its congratulating a kid who has made an outstanding accomplishment with many others and yet some of these people only are interested in finding the negatives. I dont understand why when a kid is representing the state of kentucky in a national high school all star game all everybody wants to do is critisize. How about we talk about the upside of Hopson. See here is the probem I have. You say we are trying to find ways to say something negative about him. Typically I try to build up high school players as much as possible, but to be critical of him you do not have to look far. If people aren't correcting his mistakes as far as how he approaches basketball it wll kill his basketball career. I have a hard time saying, well you don't play hard, but because you have amazing talent you can just go do whatever you want.

Part of the problem is probably the fact that he hasn't committed to UK. If he committed to UK the love fest would be on. I haven't seen him play in person, but I did see him in the first half last night. I am grateful any kid from Kentucky gets the opportunity to play in the McDonald's game, let alone represent the US in the World Games. I can also easily understand how a kid can be less motivated when playing with lesser talent. College coaches also tend to go by AAU results and not so much high school results these days. I am not mad at him, I hope he continues to succeed and that he somehow winds up at Duke, even though I know it's a long shot.

Hopson is a long 6-foot-6 and is a very good athlete, but he is a 3 who needs better guard skills with the ball and moving without it. You can lump Hopson in with many guys who look better when "real basketball" is being played.

I would think he has to play significantly better in AAU if he is getting this kind of attention.

No doubt he needs to move better without the ball. I have never seen him break into more than a jog without the ball in his hands on offense.

Never disregarded what you said. You seem to find a way to put words in people's mouth when their opinion differs from yours. FWIW, I agree that Hopson could've played harder in the 6 games I've seen him play this season. I wish him well in his basketball future.
