Coach Listermans record at CCH - 186 wins - 54 losses (.775 winning percentage)

Second only to Mote Hills at CCH - 195 wins - 52 losses (.789 winning percentage)

 

Off the top of my head, NewCath went to Rupp in 84 at 33-1, Holmes in 80 went to Freedom Hall at the identical 31-2 as this year's Dogs (having also lost during the regular season to NewCath, the only NKY loss - oooh, eery coincidence there), and Holmes in 78 went to Freedom Hall at 31-1.

Congrats, Once again to Holmes, keep it up at State!

At about 10 seconds Holmes traps Shover, a scrum ensues, bodies fly, Holmes comes out with the ball, yada, yada... Arrez lays it in for 2 at the buzzer. Instead of tied, down 1 or down

3, Cov. Cath. ends the 3rd down 5. Holmes gets the ball to start the 4th quarter. Cov. Cath. never recovered.

I was not at the game and just now watched the replay. If you watch the replay, its hard to believe a foul was not called. Shover , with possession of the ball, has the Holmes player falling/diving and hits Shover across the thighs causing Mitch to go down and lose the ball. Easy call. Foul.

Holmes, just played their butts off and there was no stopping them on that night... Fouls are missed every second of the game, I'll just say they owed that miss call... Based on previous years...

As for the game, as I said both Johnson boys are very, very good players.

 

Coach Henley deserves Coach of the Year. Just as the Holmes fans have been saying all year, I got to witness first hand some incredible athletes playing as unselfish of basketball that I have seen in the 9th region in a while. Even though Arrez is the type of player who can take his man 1 on 1 down the court, Holmes does not resort to that. Patience is so important in a game with no shot clock.

 

Good (if any) news for CovCath is that 29 of their points came from Maile and Shover, both of who will be tough to stop for anyone next year. If CovCath can develop a supporting cast (and some form of offense other then standing around) they will be a force.

 

Funny you should mention that, a few guys sitting behind me obviously hadn't been to a high school game in quite some time because in the 4th when Holmes was taking their time getting into an offense one of them said they better hurry or they aren't going to beat the shot clock. The other replied with I can't find the clock so I don't think they have it in high school.

Holmes, just played their butts off and there was no stopping them on that night... Fouls are missed every second of the game, I'll just say they owed that miss call... Based on previous years...

Let me be clear. It was a big deal at the end of the 3rd but it didn't cost CCH the game. Just a missed call. CCH took bad shots and had no one on the offensive boards. They also got lost in their zone defense and didn't account for Clark.

 

Holmes has proven that they are the superior team.

I also thought this was a terrible no-call. Shover was fouled...at least twice in the exchange at the end of the 3rd. Having said that, Holmes was the better team and deserved to win. But, this missed call ended Cov. Cath's opportunity to squeak out an upset. Best of luck to the Bulldogs in Rupp.

There were at least 3 incorrect calls against Holmes during the game as well... Pittman's block (on Maile?...could have been someone else) in which his arms were actually over top the ball in a palming motion... Horrible call. Also, let's not forget the two and-1's in the 4th that were called on the floor. Two more horrible calls.

 

In the end, it evened out IMO. However, this whole notion of make-up calls just really grinds my gears (channeling Peter Griggin, lol). If you see a foul, call it. Do not keep this tally in the back of your head of calls that you have missed. Make-up calls can turn into a vicious cycle and ruin a game's flow. Another issue I have is the "late" call. Call the foul when it happens! Not after the ball-handler has missed the layup or jumper. A perfect example was the call on Pittman. He got all ball, but two seconds earlier Ricardo Johnson bodied the CovCath player on his way up. The ref decided the bump from Johnson was a foul after Pittman's made the clean block. In an effort to right his wrong, he called the foul on Pittman as it was too late to call the body. I realize these are bang-bang situations, but I know the refs can do better.

Unfortunately for the Colonels, the season is over. Let me comment on two of the seniors.

 

If you had someone from another state say "take me to see a player who exemplifies NKY high school basketball," you'd take him to see Michael Grimes. He does absolutely nothing in a spectacular fashion. His shot is OK. His ballhandling is OK. His speed is OK. Solid athlete. Decent size.

 

He's the face of NKY basketball because once the game starts the above are irrelevant because he simply knows how to play the game on both ends and do whatever is needed on a given night. His b-ball IQ is off the charts. His D is top-notch. His passing is grossly underrated and he knows how to get the ball. He's a D3 player at best but he's a player that would start on every team in NKY despite his lack of individual skills and he makes every team a winner.

 

Secondly, hats off to JD Schmerge. JD was a one-trick pony as a frosh and a sophomore. Of course, that one trick was knocking down 3s so that's not too bad. However, about halfway through his JR year, he started getting much more aggressive on both ends of the floor. He, too, made CCH better when he was in the game with not only his ability to knock down a 3 with one of the best strokes in NKY but also with his defense and rebounding. He, too,will be sorely missed.

 

Nice job, boys.

I don't mean to take away from your post, but I don't think Grimes would start for EVERY team in nky. Probably everyone except Holmes.

 

But no doubt I have to agree Grimes is a player that does all the little things to help his team win. Kid always shows class on the court and goes hard every play. He will be missed by the CCH faithful next year.
