Why Barack Obama?

Featured Replies

Boy are you right. It is really scary when our brightest and best educated young people back someone. Bright and educated people are not to be trusted.

A college education doesn't make you bright.

Bright educated people are to be trusted. People who believe that simply being black and being elected a US Senator are accomplishments that qualify a candidate for the presidency is scary. Have you ever seen anybody rattle off a list of Obama accomplishments when asked? No? Why not? Can you list five major legislative accomplishments (not five promises) for which Obama can claim credit? If you can, were you forced to use Google's help to compile your list?

Like I said, it is scary when so many people believe that a man who has accomplished so little is ready for the presidency. I despise John McCain, but I can easily rattle off a fairly long list of his accomplishments in the US Senate without resorting to his website or a search engine.

So you will vote for a man that you despise?

In his personal and non-political life he earned his way into Columbia and Harvard and became the first African-American head of the Harvard Law Review. Instead of taking a high-salary corporate job he worked as a community organizer in Chicago. He's worked as a civil rights attorney and taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago.

"As a state legislator, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws.[35] He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare.[36] Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.[36] During his 2004 general election campaign for U.S. Senate, he won the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, whose president credited Obama for his active engagement with police organizations in enacting death penalty reforms"

In the Senate, he's worked with Republicans for comprehensive Immigration reform, and to control dangerous weapons like shoulder-fired missiles from falling into the hands of terrorists. He helped pass ethics reform. This past year he has also worked with House members to get legislation rolling to help Vets with emotional disorders.

I think Many times people confuse longevity for wisdom and good judgment. All I need to hear is McCain say that he's keeping the Iraq war going and I'm done with him.

What are five things that Hillary has accomplished that doesn't directly tie into Bill's presidency? Five things that McCain accomplished not relating to his time in the armed forces?

:creepy:

I don't need him or anyone else to feel good about being an American.

Well, I could use a boost in morale every once in a while. He provides that. A lot of our problems can be fixed by people just being happier, trusting government more and just generally feeling good. It may seem silly, but if people are happier, the wallets open up a little more and our economy is back in no time. You can call me a fool or naive, but I really believe that to be true.

Can you present five legislative accomplishments that prove he is a socialist?

It's the college kids who are sheep, I forgot.

As a college kid, college kids know nothing.

I am hoping for a miracle that will not force me to choose between McCain and a socialist (or casting a protest vote for a third-party candidate), but I have been pricing a pair of McCain noseclips just in case.:D

Seriously, if I end up voting for McCain it will only be to support our troops in Iraq. I don't like any of the likely choices in November.

I still don't see any accomplishments that typically dot a presidential candidate's resume. As for the Iraq War, Obama believed Saddam had WMDs and was working to get nuclear technology and still opposed invading Iraq. That is not my idea of good judgment. Neither is proposing that we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Well, I am not really joking. It is astounding how little college kids know. Other than BGP commentary, I get a lot of politics from major news stations. I learn economics from professors, and I know very little about tax law, just the economic trends that it causes. I know very little about the military.

And I know that I am a whole lot more in tune with America's political landscape then 95%+ of the people that I know. And I recognize my own ineptitude.

Can you present five legislative accomplishments that prove he is a socialist?
I can't name five legislative accomplishments of Obama - period - unless you count casting the votes that earned him the title of being the most liberal US Senator in 2006. (For those who are unaware of the fact, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a proud socialist and he was ranked as less liberal than Obama.)

If you want more concrete evidence of Obama's socialist sympathies, look no further than Obama's sponsorship of the Global Poverty Act of 2007. If enacted, this law would cost American taxpayers $845 billion to help meet the UN goal of collecting 0.7% of the GDP of developed countries to fight global poverty. You may think putting more American tax revenues in the hands of the crooks running the UN is a charitable act, but I view it as a giant leap toward global socialism.

WHOA! Maybe we all just need to go and get a prescription of Prozac and then everything will be alright. Maybe Obama's healthcare plan can put them in vending machines for easy access.

You are very well informed on current events and politics compared to most Americans, let alone when compared to most college students.

Please do not take my swipes at college students personally because I know that there are many exceptions and there are well informed people from all walks of life who still support Barack Hussein Obama for president. I have no problem with people who support Obama with a full understanding of his positions, but I cringe when I hear students rattle off election triumphs and the color of Obama's skin when asked to cite his accomplishments.

Good luck with your decision.
