March 4, 200818 yr And you know for sure that he is a downgrade how? I mean yeah Justin Smith made a lot of tackles, and most of them were 6 to 7 yards down field already. What good does that really do us? Also I say more teams focused on Geathers this year than they did Smith and he still only put up 2 sacks. Then the years where he had 8 sacks or so, he was not consistently putting pressure on the QB. Yeah I mean you could have one good play a game and get a sack a game and end up with 16 sacks. However if you are not getting any pressure on the QB the rest of the plays during the game, you are not doing much to help your team. Besides Justin Smith's rookie year, you hardly ever seen him get consistent pressure on the QB, and that is what killed our pass defense. Now I don't know if Odom would be able to get consistent pressure on the QB yet or not. However we do know that Smith was not able to do that, so it was time to make a change there. So IMO we can't say at all that it was a downgrade from Justin Smith. Justin Smith was suppose to be a pass rusher for us, and well he did not get that done. So now we went out and got a guy who we are hoping can get more consistent pressure on the QB. futurecoach?
March 4, 200818 yr Even on a day when we get a top free agent we still have people complaining. This is a good day, we got a big time free agent who wanted to be a Bengal. It seems they are still trying to get that big run stuffer for the D-line as well. Their track record speaks for itself. I had season tickets in then 80's. I have seen what can be. Until there are results in the win/loss column, I will maintain my position that this is a poor franchise, and I do not trust their judgement when it comes to personel. Not to say every move is a bad one as a blind squirrel will find a nut every once in a while. Hopefully the guy is a stud. I am reluctant to endorse any deal the Bengals make until it comes to fruition on the playing field.
March 4, 200818 yr futurecoach? No but I am a friend of his. Which he did want me to give the message that he will be back on here in two weeks after he takes care of a few things.

March 4, 200818 yr I may be wrong. I hope I am for the Bengals' sake. If the Bengals can add some help on the front four to help Odom, he might deliver...but, if he's placed in the same situation as Justin Smith was, then his production won't be as good. You can't underestimate the impact playing on a D-line with Haynesworth and Vandenbosch has on a guy's production...or the impact having virtually no help anywhere on the defense has on a guy's production.

If they make some additional moves to bolster the D and give Odom some support, the move may turn out alright...(I still think they overpaid)...but, like I said, if adding Odom is all they do and they're expecting a big impact, FORGET IT!

March 4, 200818 yr Yet they franchised Smith last year?? Which is something I didn't agree with, and well obviously something that they thought was a mistake as well now. Or else we probably would have seen him get franchised again this year.
March 4, 200818 yr You sure you're not futurecoach using a friends account... Yes I'm sure. Futurecoach has been busy getting things straightened out for the Teacher Education Program he is in. He did assure me that he would be back for NCAA Tournament in two weeks. So in a couple of weeks you will have me and him talking things out with you. :thumb:

March 5, 200818 yr Author You are defending one of the worst franchises in the NFL. You agree with the way things are done here in Bengaldom. You like a .360 winning pct and no playoff wins in the last 17 years? Well I don't! They suck![/QUOTe] I am only addressing the last 5 years since Marvin took over a 2-14 team and started doing things differently; before that, they indeed were terrible. Many want to lump the whole 17 together; it has been very different the last 5 and much better. You didn't address the scouting success, because it cannot be argued; they have done much better since Marvin took over. Where Marvin messed up was '04- Ratliff, Williams, Miller, Johnson, Askew, Geathers; if 2 or 3 of those were players, in addition to Geathers, then we have a defense. Their other drafts have been very solid, so they are obviously scouting well. The last 2 years have obviously been a setback; in '06 at 8-5 they were set; I can't explain that ending; they should have made the playoffs; last year was an aberration due to injuries-OL, RB, LB is too much to overcome. "They suck!"??????????? Now you are losing credibility; the Dolphins suck, the Falcons suck; the Raiders suck; the Ravens suck; the Jets suck. 7-9 is mediocre at best and unacceptable. But many critics say the Bengals underachieved the last 2 seasons; if they underachieved, the talent has to be there; the critics can't have it both ways- critical of scouting and critical of the record.
March 5, 200818 yr Since this is an Odom thread I just finished reading this article: Bengals.com article on Odom I realize Bengals.com is the Bengals telling you how great the Bengals are but Odom sounds like a great fit for Cincy in every way possible. I love his attitude. With the addition of Odom I think Cincy is two DTs away from having a solid defense in 2008.

I really want McCree if he's still out there.
