March 4, 200818 yr Author I didn't realize Steinbach was on the roster last year... Sorry, I meant Ghiachic.
March 4, 200818 yr The Bengals gave him $30 million over 5 years? Wow... That's a lot to give a guy who's never gotten over 8 sacks. He could be great for them, but that is a ton of money! Osi Umenyiora's last contract was only 6 years $41 million... Check what Justin Smith got from the niners, more than Odom.
March 4, 200818 yr Perhaps and I agree that we gave him a little too much money, but any HB post in a Bengals thread will be negative about them. Well, I can't speak for other posts, but in this one, he's just calling it as he sees it. Maybe Odom is emerging and will end up being a steal for Cincinnati, but it seems unlikely to me. In his first three seasons he averaged a sack about every 9 games. He did have 8 this past season, but that was on a D-line that featured the most dominating DT in the NFL this past season (Albert Haynesworth) and DE Kyle Vandenbosch with 12 sacks holding down one side...that left the Odom and Travis LaBoy, who was just as productive, to rotate on the other side. Add it all up...Odom benefitted from two great players drawing the focus away. You can argue that splitting time hurt his numbers, but is also kept him fresher, which would be a huge benefit when pass rushing in one-on-one situations later in games. If he's forced to be "the man" on Cincy's front four, Bengals fans are going to be terribly disappointed. He won't be as productive as Justin Smith if they don't get him some help. What killed the Robertson deal? That's a move the Bengals really needed to make, IMO.
March 4, 200818 yr Check what Justin Smith got from the niners, more than Odom. I think the Niners overpaid for Smith too, but I think their deal makes more sense...Smith produced decent numbers on defensive line (and defense) where he was probably the #1 focus of opposing offenses on a consistent basis. Odom had one good season (sackwise) while benefitting from two studs drawing attention away from him on his D-line. Smith has been pretty consistent and his #'s have been better than Odom's in very different situations. Put him in a situation where he's freed up more and not the focus of attention, and he could surprise a lot of people. Put Odom in the opposite situation, and he could disappoint...
March 4, 200818 yr Check what Justin Smith got from the niners, more than Odom. I agree that he is overpaid, but he has more experience. He's had 2 years with over 8 sack, and 5 years over 6 sacks. He's not worth what they paid though.

March 4, 200818 yr It's funny to see HB spin everything negative in any sort of Bengals thread. Like shootin' fish in a barrel
March 4, 200818 yr Author The Bengals waste money! Never:rolleyes::lol: The Sporting News has him rated as the top free agent DE, ahead of Justin Smith, so someone outside of the organization thinks he is a pretty good player. They got him for a lot less than Smith. What will determine his worth is if the Bengals can have 2 good DT's and a good set of LB's to stop the running game to go with him and Geathers; that will make them more effective as pass rushers. Barring injuries (Bengals seem to be cursed), Geathers, Odom, Fanene, and Pollack looks like a nice rotation at DE (yes I think Pollack will play). If they don't spend any more money if free agency, they've got to move up in the draft to assure themselves of getting Ellis or Dorsey.
March 4, 200818 yr The Sporting News has him rated as the top free agent DE, ahead of Justin Smith, so someone outside of the organization thinks he is a pretty good player. I think with the lack of a GM and a decent scouting department this must be how the Bengals make decisions. Just open up the Sporting News:cool:
March 4, 200818 yr Author So you know more than people who follow the NFL for a living........ Their scouts have done just fine; they are in the top 5 in the league of draftees still in the NFL; a way overblown criticism!
March 4, 200818 yr Author nfl.com/Titans team site Odom stats 2007 21 Tackles/8 sacks 2006 9 Tackles/.5 sacks 2005 31 Tackles/2 sacks 2004 21 Tacklse/2 sacks. I'd go with these numbers before Bengals.com For whatever reason that I have not yet figured out, the NFL coaches' tackle totals are different than what the NFL has; I don't know where Hobson got the number from, but I don't think he just made it up; he also said Odom led the Titans with 29 QB pressures.
March 4, 200818 yr So you know more than people who follow the NFL for a living........ Their scouts have done just fine; they are in the top 5 in the league of draftees still in the NFL; a way overblown criticism! You are defending one of the worst franchises in the NFL. You agree with the way things are done here in Bengaldom. You like a .360 winning pct and no playoff wins in the last 17 years? Well I don't! They suck!
March 4, 200818 yr Even on a day when we get a top free agent we still have people complaining. This is a good day, we got a big time free agent who wanted to be a Bengal. It seems they are still trying to get that big run stuffer for the D-line as well.
March 4, 200818 yr Where did he attend College? Great guy and gives a 100%. Bengal fans you will like this guy.
March 4, 200818 yr Overpaid...bad move. Perhaps a panic move to try and get something and save face after losing out on the other guys. Keep in mind that Odom got those 8 sacks on a D-line that featured Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch...who's going to take that pressure off of him in Cincy. He's is a downgrade from Justin Smith. Bengals fans should be upset, not excited. Personally, I'd prefer to see my team stand pat rather than waste money... And you know for sure that he is a downgrade how? I mean yeah Justin Smith made a lot of tackles, and most of them were 6 to 7 yards down field already. What good does that really do us? Also I say more teams focused on Geathers this year than they did Smith and he still only put up 2 sacks. Then the years where he had 8 sacks or so, he was not consistently putting pressure on the QB. Yeah I mean you could have one good play a game and get a sack a game and end up with 16 sacks. However if you are not getting any pressure on the QB the rest of the plays during the game, you are not doing much to help your team. Besides Justin Smith's rookie year, you hardly ever seen him get consistent pressure on the QB, and that is what killed our pass defense. Now I don't know if Odom would be able to get consistent pressure on the QB yet or not. However we do know that Smith was not able to do that, so it was time to make a change there. So IMO we can't say at all that it was a downgrade from Justin Smith. Justin Smith was suppose to be a pass rusher for us, and well he did not get that done. So now we went out and got a guy who we are hoping can get more consistent pressure on the QB.
