A starting position in most professions don't pay that great. Why should law enforcement be an exception?

OK, these are my thoughts. I have scanned thru most of these post and forgive me if I'm off base but, from the day our first son was born I had heard on the news and from the banks and just about every advisor you could find that you need to begin now to save for your childs college tuition. We did just that. Fortunately now we will be able to send both our children to the college of their choice. Our oldest had some scholarship offers, but he just wasn't interested in the school. Fortunately we could send him to the school he wanted. Personnally if there is anything in this world you could do for your kids it is to be able to send them to the college of there choice and not have them have to carry the burden of that debt when they graduate and begin thier lives.

 

We definately made sacrifices. As that money grows it became very tempting to do some fun things. We didn't, and believe me, I actually enjoy writting those tuition checks because I know I can and I know that it is the best thing I can do for my child.

 

True story: I ran into a guy the other day and noticed he had a pic of his son in a football uniform. I asked if he really liked football and the fathers answer was, "he is my retirement fund". He is sending his son to private school and is planning on his son getting a DI scholly in football. This father coaches his son and continued to tell me how his son is the stud of the team and was going to write his own ticket to a DI school and beyond. This boy is in the fourth grade! Not, in my opinion, good planning for your childs colllege fund!

 

But many parents plan on this and this isn't always the way things turn out.

 

All I can say is; Please parents, save your money for your kids future. If they get that scholly and things work out, great. Then take that vacation or buy that new car or even that condo on the beach but please your kids come first.

 

I had a single mother trying to support my brother and I. She saved every penny she could but it would have been darn near impossible for her to pay my entire way through college. She has helped though.

Isn't there a program that turns student loans into grants in the state of Kentucky if you go into teaching? I agree get off the kids backs. Forgiving the loans to get people into jobs that normally have a shortage and are important is not a bad thing. It is not trying to get a free ride. That IMO

This would be unconstitutional for her to do according to Article 1 Section 9 Clause 3 of the constitution which states that congress can not create a "bill of attainder" which basically means a law that only effects one specific person or one specific group of people. This law would only benefit those receiving higher education to go in to government jobs.

 

This was why congress couldn't pass a law for Terry Schiavo a few years ago like some were calling for, because it would be a "bill of attainder" because it would only effect one person.

Not really.

Joining the military doesn't always entail going to war. I know many people who have been in the military and were never involved in a war.

But could at any second and they know that going in.

You are right my question was slightly off topic. I don't think it is a good idea to excuse anyone from a loan they obtained legally and knowingly. My question though was to see just what kind of person is being attracted to law enforcement these days. I think your refusal to answer the question tells me a lot. An honest person will pay his debts.

Everybody seems to want more and more for people in public service jobs around here until someone actually proposes something for them...and then everyone thinks it is a "load of crap" :lol:.

While you seem like a nice enough fellow, HB, I do not want to pay for your education. You may be excited about the prospect of having somebody "forgive" your debt, but many of those who would be paying for the government's "forgiveness" are angered at the prospect. It is your debt, not mine.

If the school or government offered to reimburse you for all the money you'd spent sending your kids to school, would you take it? Or would you decline their offer?

So it's okay for the military, but not okay for public service jobs? How?

Look, I don't think any of us here would absolutely refuse to accept the government's offer to absolve us of some debt or provide us with some "free" money. Assuming you qualify (I don't), I doubt if anyone out there refuses to take the Child Tax Credit on their return or will decline the upcoming Bush Tax Refund.

 

My problem with this whole issue is the following:

 

1) The government can hardly afford to absorb the costs of all these loans for people working in the public sector. Do you realize how much this would be?

 

2) There are lots and lots of other people working in the public sector that struggled and sacrificed to save for college and repay their loans as they should. Is it fair that these people received no assistance at all from the gov't when many of their co-workers would be receiving this entitlement?

 

3) It is, in my opinion, nothing more than pandering by votes on the part of Clinton. She knows full well she will never get something like this passed. But on the campaign trail it sure sounds good, doesn't it?

 

4) I think basing your vote for the President based solely on this issue (relax, HB, I'm not directing this comment specifically to you) is short-sighted and selfish. If you truly think Hillary is the best overall candidate for President, then so be it. But if you disagree with just about everything she stands for and are simply enticed by her offer that she may absolve you of loans YOU should be paying back yourself, she should NOT be your choice for President.

So go around telling all the people who had their debts paid off by the military that they aren't honest, just like you basically told me I wasn't honest. I'm sure they will appreciate it.

 

I have never implied that I will not pay my debts. I wish people here would stop implying it for me.
