Humans are hard-wired to fear snakes, researchers say

Featured Replies

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Two University of Virginia researchers believe that humans are genetically predisposed to be deathly afraid of snakes. Judy S. DeLoache, a U.Va. professor of developmental psychology, said she has a snake phobia, but wonders why. "The question was, where did that fear come from?"

She believes it's because snakes would have posed a significant threat to our ancestors, so a fear of snakes remains hardwired into human brains today.

I will steal a line from cvillecat for this one. "I ain't afraid of but two things and snakes is both of them" :D.

Snakes scare the heck out of me.

.

Some might say it dates back to Adam and Eve.

I am mezmorized watching them on T.V. I hate them with a passion. I posted a couple of years ago but my old house in Lexington had a nest around it. Just about everytime I cut the grass one would shoot out between my feet. It got to the point I would chase them with the mower so they would strike the blade:)

All I know is that someone who isn't scared of them could pick one up and chase me off the side of a cliff with it.

The only good snake is a dead snake.:flame: Let cats take care of rodents, I can do without the snakes.

Boo Professor!!! You know you really loved Bull!!!

I wonder how much they spent on this study to tell us what we already know.

 I was thinking the same thing. Their next study will probably be on spiders and scorpions. And I bet the conclusion is the same as with snakes.

I'd rather see a tiger standing on my back porch than a snake.

I still haven't forgiven you over what you did to me with that snake. It's a wonder I hadn't had a heart attack.:scared:

1owlzfan showed me a Bull Snake she had in her classroom, then about 20 minutes later, while the image of the snake was still on my mind, she sneaked up behind me and threw a rubber hose around my neck. I freaked out, screamed, and fell out of my chair on my knees, and started crawling down an isle. Lordy!!!!

Somehow, someway, someday, I WILL get even.:fire::devil::fight::madman:

Prof:flame:...Bull, the snake.

I've wondered this for a while now and since were talking about animals people are scared of, this is the perfect thread to bring it up in.

Why aren't people more scared of whales ? Those things could swallow you whole. They eat seals like their noting but an appitizer and yet we try to train them, put them in big pools and ride them like it's nothing. A whale get washed up on a beach and you've got a hundred people trying to push it back into the water. I bet people wouldnt try to push a shark back into the water. Whales don't scare people and Ive always wondered why.

Because you could see a whale coming from a mile away. Snakes are sneaky, sniffling, snickering, salacious creatures who sneak up on you when you are doing the most routine of tasks.

That's my guess, all alliteration aside. :thumb:

Hey man, I'm as scared of snakes as the next. My whole thing lies with the people pushing these big things back into the water. Let the thing set there and die, it's part of life. If a snake bites you, theres a real good chance your going to live. If a whale on the other hand manages to get ahold of you, not much chance in surviving that one.

Honestly, I wonder how many people a year are killed by whales ? You really never hear anything about it.
