The line coaches are, Returning for his 3rd year is Brandon Brewer, He is the Defensive line coach and works with offensive tackles. On the offensive side of the ball the indians hired Josh Willoughby. Coach Willoughby was a 3 year starter for Middle Tennesse State, he also coaches defensive tackles.

This is a good point, but the question was what would it take for MC to improve the program. I don't see them getting over the hump until someone can get more of those one sport athletes to expand their horizons. Not saying its any one coaches fault, just saying a lot goes into a players decision to play 2 and 3 sports and they sometimes need a little extra nudge. One thing is for sure, it's not for lack of facilities-awesome campus!!

 

A lot goes into a player's decision to play multiple sports, some athletes only want to play where they can "star" and they won't participate in multiple sports because very few players are the star in several sports. These type athletes aren't willing to put in the hours just to be considered a multiple sport player. I don't think it has a much to do with coaches as it does with the society. I agree nudging those players is a great idea and they will benefit from expanding their horizons.

 

From what I understand MC has a group of fairly new coaches in their system, maybe they will begin to support each other and encourge the athletes to play multiple sports. Basketball, baseball and soccer compete nearly year round, football has a more defined season. The coaches need to allow players to practice the sport that is in season and not pressure the kids to participate in the activities outside the season.

Are you referring to Coach Willoughby? He is new this year, but he coached while Coach "C" was there.

Hot off the Mt. Sterling Advocate press, starter Senior Dan Bailey is sidelined with an torn ACL. Tough luck, Bailey has been bulking up since last year and he was starting to look pretty good.

I heard about this a couple days ago. I feel real bad for the kid. He has been in the program 3 years and paid his dues. He has worked hard on the scout team the last two years and finally got his chance to start and has in injury. His surgery is on the 29th, the day before the rec bowl, he plans to attend the rec bowl.

Absolutely agreed. Dan is a good friend of mine and a good guy, just not a good thing.

Nope. And the basketball team has started summer basketball and he hasn't been there so I don't know what the situation is.

That quote was concerning Cody Groves. Hendrix isn't playing football. If anyone wants to talk about Hendrix I think the basketball forum would be more fitting. I have seen Nic since his surgery and he is doing well and will be on the court soon!

I am an Apollo Alum. I have known Dan Gooch for many years. I played against his brother Tim. He is a good man, and if it is football results you want, you have the right man. I would give anything to have him back at good ole AHS. The admin here just wasn't flexible enough (what I mean is they didn't care about the program). If you want to get him going, ask him about his tackle on Herschel Walker when he was with the Stallions. I witnessed it. It was bone crushing. Good luck to Montgomery County.

I agree that the coaches at Montgomery need to work together to encourage kids to play multiple sports, you'll lose more good athletes than you'll keep if you insist they put your sport first at all times. I know for a fact Coach Gooch has discouraged kids from playing baseball due to spring practice,which is a shame. Coach Combs doesn't discourage kids from playing football due to fallball practice for baseball. It goes both ways.

It was obvious to me watching the freshman scrimmage Spencer County that Montgomery County is on the upswing as far as football. I believe the main reason for this is much improved coaching at the middle school level. We went a few years with below average coaching and it show when these players got to high school. Coach Stockdale is doing a wonderful job at the middle school and has these kids learning to play hard every play, something I believe was missing with previous coaching staffs. Keep up the good work Coach Stockdale.
