IMO most coaches have requested something like this at times, most did not leave a trail to show their request. I'm sure the way the 13th officals are assigned will be watched alot closer now. Canady has a tough job to begin with and so do the officals and it just got tougher.

My gut reaction is that anytime you let coaches dictate who the officials of a contest will be, the result will never be good. This is precisely why the position of assigning secretary was created in the first place.

 

Now as far as a punishment. First and foremost, I too am curious how said emails were obtained. Not that it makes it any more wrong or right, but for legality sake.

 

Second, the assigning secretary should probably lose his job and be placed on suspension, as well as the official(s) in question. Legally, that's probably the maximum of what the KHSAA can do. Realistically, they aren't likely to even push it that far. Jail time?? Surely you jest.

 

Finally, regardless of whether you want to believe this or not, this type of thing is very common. Coaches calling asking for a specific set of officials, that isn't as common. But having a particular "crew" or "group" of officials aligned with a certain level of play in a sport is not uncommon at all. The reasoning, and I'm not saying right or wrong, is that better officials should get the opportunity(and will be better) to work better games. New officials need to learn the game somewhere, and what better place than the lower levels? The reason these groups sometimes get small is due to lack of officials. However, NO one person or crew should ever work the majority or even half of a teams schedule unless forced to out of necessity.

I don't really see any legal issues here. It appears to me that someone who was friends with the assignor took advantage of their friendship and put the assignor in a very bad spot. He should have told them to follow the same process as everyone else, but maybe he was just trying to please too many coaches instead of just doing the job he was supposed to be doing.

Les - Where are you on this one? It's not like you to sit on the sidelines and watch on something like this.

I wonder if someone done something illegal to get these e-mails. I just can't see either of the parties involved just sending these out to everyone. If all the coaches in the 13th got one who sent it to them? That would be on the e-mail wouldn't it?

I’m hoping my Tech. Department finds out who has been getting on my e-mails. They didn’t print all of the e-mails that had my responses. On one, I responded back by saying I asked Santa Claus for a convertible Lexus and didn’t get it.”

 

Whoever it was, didn't send the e-mails to the coaches all season long. Another assigning secretary needs to be in place for next year. IMO

Look at the adresses on the e-mails none are school adresses so they are not open records.

I would say he hoping the thief reads that to scare them.

IMO there are three prongs of responsibility and it starts at the top w/ the (1)KHSAA...they should and do have a tremendous amount of control over the these kinds of situations. The board of control should keep a tight lid on those in position within the KHSAA. In any organization there is an element of dishonsety, lack of integrity, and rules and consequences for inappropriate behavior. Unfortunelty, with a name like Clay County I am not for sure if they would get the same treatment say as a non-name school out there who does the same. (2)The assigning secretary position must be responsible to the board of control IMO...and KHSAA. If you don't believe me come post season ask others down the road of their perception of the regions in the mountains! There has always been a lot of shinnaganahans of the sort in each region in the mountains come post season and that is sad. Lastly, the (3)coach and school. He/she is responsible first and foremost to the school and school system who hires. The schools decisions are a lot of times dependent on past success, community perception, and relationships with the administration and school system as a whole.
