February 25, 200818 yr You may, or may not be right in saying a "provision" for requesting other officials other than the ones assigned doesn't exists...But I wonder if there is a "rule" that says a coach can't ask for a better or more experienced crew. I'm not trying to justify anything, and no, several wrongs (as some may see it) don't make a right, but if any of you out there think coaches don't ask their assigning secretary to adjust their officiating crews (even though a scratched one is not on it) from time to time, you must have your head in the sand. Whether you are a Clay fan or not there is no way you can justify what their coaches have done.
February 25, 200818 yr But doesn't it say without saying that there are some, how should I say, "partial" refs in the 13th? I think there is obviously a problem with referees being partial, not just in the 13th region. Not pointing any fingers. But how do you prove it? Even upon request, the coach could say I requested that guy just because I know he'd give us a fair game.

Even upon request, the coach could say I requested that guy just because I know he'd give us a fair game. I've seen hoops with officials from several different regions through my travels. Lots of shady stuff goes on over in the 13th. What I noticed as much as anything over there was there were always certain faces that I only saw in certain places. As far as those who might not see a problem with a coach contacting the requesting secretary and asking for certain officials (or for certain officials to be scratched beyond the scratch list), this practice opens the door for a lot of things: 1. For my earlier item of generally seeing certain officials only at certain places, it sets things up to swing even more toward that extreme. There are several who do play it straight, but the ones who don't end up getting on every scratch list except the place where they tend to favor, and that further retrenches the problem. 2. Fans are already hostile toward perceived homerism amongst officials. Once these names go public (and they will, you can bet), those officials will have a very rough way to go -- way beyond any verbal abuse they've ever experienced. 3. If the assigning secretary is allowing extra scratches for one school, it's only fair that it's done for all. With this public, 13th Region coaches now have fair game to ask for the moon and stars, and would feel almost justifiably owed as much.
February 25, 200818 yr To me I don't see how any of this would hold up in court until someone can prove that the e-mails are ligit and to do that I think whoever stole them would have to prove how they got them...(I just don't see anyone doing that) I am not defending anyone I have no dog in the fight. But you would think in order to print such a story the newspaper would have a good source and proof. Did they jump the gun?

I can 100 percent assure you the writer has a good source and all the requisite proof.
February 25, 200818 yr No refs have done anything. The people at fault are Clay Co. coaches and the assigning secretary. According to the article, didn't one of the e-mails say that a particular referee told the coach he wanted to call certain game? Why would a ref request a game? Shouldn't they just accept whatever assignment they have been designated and let it go at that? Of course, that doesn't mean the ref did that, just that the coach said he did.
February 25, 200818 yr Author Yes Professor it did say that. If you want to see exactly what the emails said, all you have to do is click on the images to the right of the articles.
February 25, 200818 yr Would "asking" for certain officials be considered a rules violation or scandal? For some reason I'm having a hard time seeing anything that is worthy of any kind of punishment. I'd say if anything, DeVries & Boucher will advise these guys to use the phone instead of email from now on. Why does that not suprise me? I can't see how anyone could read the emails, and not see a very clear problem. I've wondered for years why we always seemed to have the same officials when we played Clay County, I guess it is pretty clear now. I agree with Jessee James...Heads should/will roll.
February 25, 200818 yr Out of the blue million request by Spurlock and Woods can anyone confirm if the refs were indeed changed. I also bet that you want here many comment's from the the 13th region coaches because they all do this but most are smarter than to send an e-mail. He did say he has logged more than 300 hours on his cell phone. I wonder how many of those were 13th region coaches he was talking to?
February 25, 200818 yr But the coaches can only scratch 3 refs per year. So if they use their right and scratch 3 and have a problem with another, what can they do?They use the Ref's assigned to them. When Coaches dictate, whom they want and when they want....you're going to have a problem. For example, Joe Smith is a great official and suddenly, he gets calls from 3 different schools to work 3 different games, what happens. That is why the Coaches get the opportunity, to scratch officials and then those who are assigned, will work the game. You may, or may not be right in saying a "provision" for requesting other officials other than the ones assigned doesn't exists...But I wonder if there is a "rule" that says a coach can't ask for a better or more experienced crew. That Coach may feel his/her game, is the most important but I would imagine, other coaches feel the same, about their game. If a Region allows the coaches, to request Ref's and have them assigned, then you've created a problem for the remaining games that evening and you're circumventing the Assigning Secretaries duties.
February 25, 200818 yr Les - Where are you on this one? It's not like you to sit on the sidelines and watch on something like this.
