Belfry..... yeah(what is the history past this decade)not sure need some info.

Belfry was 3A runner ups in 78, 85, 86 and 07. They won 2A championships in 03 and 04. They have been a consistent state power since the mid 80's and had a very solid history before that.

Belfry started football in 1925 and they have about 450 wins since 1949 (Coach Haywood has 234 of those since 1984) and their records are not available before that.

Belfry's current football history really started in 1959 with Coach Vipperman. Since that season, from 1959-2007, Belfry has a record of 398-163-1. Over that span of 49 years, they have a 70.8% winning percentage and have averaged 8.1 wins per season.

Breathitt has to be up there cause of the three rings. Yeah Belfry has been there but when have they won it all? Once? Twice? Therefore I would put Breathitt infront of Belfry and anyone else who doesnt have as many rings.

Belfry has made it to the Carpet 6 times.... tied with fellow Pike Countian Pikeville for the most of any mountain school. Breathitt may be 3 for 3, but to me making it to the state finals 6 times is a much more respectable number, especially when you still came away with 2 rings.

Speaking of Pikeville the Panthers have just as many titles as Breathitt (3) but with double the number of state championship appearances.

At this point in time, with a view from afar:

1. Belfry

2. Bell County

3. Johnson Central

4. Breathitt County

5. Corbin or Hazard

Belfry is #1, without question, given their recent success and the fact they are consistently near or at the top of their class. Johnson Central is making a charge.

No Rockastle? Hazard and Johnson Central over Rock? Come to the Mountains and watch some football and then get back to me.

At this point in time, yes ... Rockcastle hasn't been much of a factor the last two or three years.

Bell Co is going to be a very solid team this year. They went undefeated in the regular season last year and losing to a very good Lex Cath team in the playoffs. They lose hardly anyone from last years team. They will be the best team in the mountains this year.

When you are talking about programs I believe you have to consider it over a several year period, not 1 or 2 seasons. Rockastle is only 5 years removed from back to back 3A championship games having beat Highlands and CovCath in consecutive years. All that could change, but right now I can't see putting Hazard and Johnson Central ahead of Rock as a program.

One sub-par year! Rock is in the top 5, just look back and you will see.

Hate to burst the bubble but Corbin has been to the finals 7 times.

I'm calling Corbin a mountain team because they were already identified as such on this thread.

I have an official man-crush on Hatz. biggrin.gif

But Belfry still wins because 4 of their trips were in 3A.

Here is the math.

Belfry 4x3A=12 plus 2x2A=4, Total=16

Corbin 7x2A=14

Breathitt 3x3A=9

Pikeville 6x1A=6

I agree that Belfry is great but the math is just funny.
