I've watched Landon play since 7th grade and he is a pretty nice player, but in no way would he ever see playing time at UK. He lacks the ball handling ability and athleticism to contribute at that level. He's not a top 5 player in the state, but got some recognition from Painstville's run in the All A.

 

On a side note... due to an early exit by Shelby Valley in the All A regional, the state missed an opportunity to see IMO the most complete player in the 15th in Elisha Justice.

I've never seen him play, but I can assure you that being from EKY has nothing to do with why he won't win Mr. Basketball. First of all, there's Scotty Hopson and everyone else. Second, look at the schools that Miller, Mack, and Hopson are going to. Miller - UK. Mack - Butler (Top 15 team). Hopson - Wherever he wants. Not sure Where Henderson is going. But I can assure you that this kid is not in the same league as Hopson.

 

Another thought to point out is that no one notices UHA point guard TyShawn Edmonson, due to the very large shadow that Hopson casts, but I think Edmonson could be mentioned as one of the top players in the state.

 

There is a whole lot more to basketball than just talent. Hopson has talent, but lacks everything else it takes to be a great basketball player. To say there is Hopson and then everyone else makes no sense.

Slone does not have the talent Hopson has, but he plays much harder!

Actually, the whole state got to see him last year at the Sweet 16. Unless he's improved by a bundle since last year, I have a hard time buying that he's a more complete player than Slone.

He has improved dramatically since last season, especially in his physical development. He is without question the quickest player in the region, the best ballhandler in the region, and far and away the best defender in the region. Slone is a better scorer than Justice, but IMO that has more to do with mentality and confidence than ability. :thumb:

Maybe he can carry on the Paintsville tradition started by Todd Tackett.

Kid can play..Saw him at the all A and at the Prep Classic @ the MCHS Arena.

Without a doubt, Landon could walk on at UK, and with his work ethic and toughness, see some playing time by the time he is a Jr or Sr. During the summers he plays pickup with all of us older guys in Prestonsburg. You will see the likes of JR Vanhoose, and several other former college basketball players from Transy, Thomas Moore, Pikeville, and Alice Lloyd playing there. Landon is usually the best player on the floor and he had gained alot of toughness by playing with the older guys. And I mean lets be honest, Landon is strides ahead of the other walk ons that UK already has: Dusty Mills, Mark Krebs, and that kid with the weird last name (lol). I'm pretty sure that he has been offered by Murray, EKU, Georgetown, Pikeville, and Marshall.

If he is not in the top 5 or 6 then give me your players (Hopson, Miller and?).

Landon Slone is a very solid player, who has traveled considerably and played against some very competition, in both the summer and regular season. His DS AAU team, played in many states and he got evaluated then by numerous college coaches.

 

He has very good court awareness, instincts for the game and the mental toughness, to play college basketball. He's not afraid to rebound or take the ball to the rim.

 

He's getting several inquiries and unlike stated before, has several offers. Many schools from D1 to NAIA are very interested. In my opinion, Landon would be #2 in college and could be a very good player. He'll have a choice to make.

 

I think this sums it up and explains why he has gotten the looks he has and we really havent heard much about him this season. Slone is a household name though if you have followed KY high school basketball the last 4 seasons. The trips around the country playing AAU are what get kids to colleges, not playing down in the holler in front of the hometown folks.

I can see Kentucky offering Slone a walk-on slot ... he's a nice player, better than I gave him credit for before this year, but he looks like a mid-major guard at best.
