He wasnt bad. He was a big name, and that is what was asked for. QB is always a big name at Bell Co., doesnt mean they were great.

 

He was pretty doggone good if you ask me. He was the difference in that Bell team without a doubt. I remember watching them play for the district title on TV. Over 8000 in attendance and Bell won because of Woolum. Also, he played that game on one leg if I am correct on the year. They all seem to run together anymore.

I would say that there have been a number of really good players over the years (that people over at Bell could name) that should have been at Pineville instead of Bell.

Quality players find good programs. Pineville, pathfork and down the valley also.

Not to deter from thread topic - but just to answer the question about Shawn Woolum. He graduated from Bell in 1994. He transferred into Bell from Pineville his senior season ('94). Also, Enoch Huff was from Middlesboro. He played up at Bell and I believe graduated around '97.

 

As for Pineville, I agree with manimal - I feel they need to focus on weight lifting and retaining their players. They're just in a tough area. If the talent is good enough, it is likely they will go somewhere else (Although not always the case.)

Everyone is talking about kids leaving Pineville and going to Bell County, but I know of a couple of great high school football players who were born and raised in Pineville and ended up going to Corbin as well.

Put it this way Pineville has more county kids playing on their team than Bell has city kids.

 

 

Pineville will be in a district with Harlan Ind, Jenkins, and Hazard I think.

I am not sure of the kids last name but Dominic Carter maybe? He went to Pineville until 6th or 7th grade when they realized what a running back he could be and he has been at Bell Co. since. Jeremy Mills(not sure on the first name) went to Pineville. Ben Madon who should be a big name before he graduates went to Pineville. All of them transfer in the early middleschool years. Those are just a few of the big names I can think off the top of my head that play for Bell county right now. Then you have Clint Cashen and Rob Madon at Corbin. Both went to Pineville until 6th or 7th grade.

 

I understand that these players want better recognition and to get that they need to go to a bigger school with more "recent" tradition. But looking over the past 20 years Pineville could have built into a real region threat year in and year out with players that went to other schools.

 

If you look at the success Pineville is having in basketball right now, you would see the formula that they are trying to do in football. You start getting the kids interested early with booster ball and then the ones that love it and are devoted to it the parents and coaches work with them. Pineville has a really successful football program among the younger kids. The middleschool (7th and 8th) went gone undefeated not too long ago and so did the 5th and 6th grade. Thats not just one year either, they usually win 7 or 8 games out of 10 or so. Then you have teams for kindergarten and up. But it just seems like everytime you see a player that just looks like he is really going to make an impact on the turn around of the program he leaves for another school.

My friend freshman are not big names.:sssh::sssh: Until they do something on the HS level they are just another player. Mills is the only one that contributed on the Varsity level to the best of my knowledge.

 

 

Coach Elam will have another spring and summer to get the players into his system he will be competitive. But look for him to move on when the timing is right.
