I got it BirdsFan. The good old days.

...Didn't that award get retired with Jim Trout in 1976?? (lol) Coach Luecke was the best! He'd get up and do a poem about all the kids who "lived" in his training room and give a trophy (a mounted band aid box) to the "most oft injured" player! Who would have won it this year? Blake Newman? Alex Horner?

My brother was the first recipient. It sat on the shelf in our living room for many years.

There wasn't many like Coach Luecke. Fortunately I didn't have to go to the training room that often, but I always stopped by to get my dose of Coach Luecke before practice.

Coach Luecke was a class act. He is deserving of his own thread on here. I am sure there are a ton of great stories that can be shared about Coach Luck.

The man was living history museum. I was very lucky to have been in one of his classes.

That is about half the team isn't it?

That is about half the team isn't it?

Including freshman, there are about 100 players.

WOW does everyone get something? Way to many awards

Take the two Freshman awards off and yes, it's over half the team. I feel sorry for the others that didn't get an award.

WOW does everyone get something? Way to many awards

What NewCath doesn't give out 34 plus awards at their 8 and a half hour banquet!

Oh my God!! My sister stopped by at 8:25 and she said the banquet is still going on. She said they created new awards and they haven't even got to the coach's gifts yet when the seniors talk about a coach and give them a gift. It started at 12:30 :scared::scared:

This is the only post I've read in the thread and maybe I'll get blasted for this, but that's just stupid.

Once a program reaches the six hour mark, it isn't a banquet anymore it is a telethon.

Congrats to all the kids that got the awards, but I was particularly glad to see Joe Fitz get the Red Dog Dougherty award. This may sound a bit silly, but to me, its the most prestigious of the awards due to it being given in honor of such a great man. And while we had a bunch, a whole bunch, of very good players (which is why I'm somewhat hesitant to single out Joe) on a very, very good football team, Joe was, in my opinion, the straw that stirred the drink on Defense. Its really a shame he did not get more post season recognition. He certainly deserved it. I watched the highlight film (codenamed Dr. Zhivago) last night, and it again struck me just how dang good of a football player he was. Very nice young man coming from a very nice family. Thanks Joe and thank you to every senior for your time, effort, committment and dedication to the Birds football program. The Tradition does indeed live on.
