Highlands Banquet

Featured Replies

This is the only post I've read in the thread and maybe I'll get blasted for this, but that's just stupid.

Once a program reaches the six hour mark, it isn't a banquet anymore it is a telethon. :D

You shouldn't get blasted as its just your opinion. Which may be wrong, but nonetheless your entitled to your opinion. Dale uses the banquet as a love fest for all the players particularly the seniors. I won't deny that it was a very long day and there are ways to make it shorter, but at the end of the day, if a mistake or error is going to be made, at least the motivation for such mistake or error is to honor and give thanks to a group of very dedicated young men (which I have to admit, I had to keep reminding myself at the 6 hr mark and beyond). :thumb:

Coach Luecke was a class act. He is deserving of his own thread on here. I am sure there are a ton of great stories that can be shared about Coach Luck.

You got that right my friend. Great man. A colorful of a presence in Ky football and track as there has ever been. A lof of folks may not know that Luck had the opportunity to get involved in the family business and make a lot of money, but turned it down after he graduated from OU because he wanted to be a teacher and coach young men. He was also a very talented singer.

Congrats to all the kids that got the awards, but I was particularly glad to see Joe Fitz get theg Red DoDougherty award. This may sound a bit silly, but to me, its the most prestigious of the awards due to it being given in honor of such a great man. And while we had a bunch, a whole bunch, of very good players (which is why I'm somewhat hesitant to single out Joe) on a very, very good football team, Joe was, in my opinion, the straw that stirred the drink on Defense. Its really a shame he did not get more post season recognition. He certainly deserved it. I watched the highlight film (codenamed Dr. Zhivago) last night, and it again struck me just how dang good of a football player he was. Very nice young man coming from a very nice family. Thanks Joe and thank you to every senior for your time, effort, committment and dedication to the Birds football program. The Tradition does indeed live on.

I believe this award started in 1987. I wonder if anybody could name the person who has won it each year.

True, it was a loooong banquet. That being said, it had to be long. Each and every young man on that team got some well deserved recognition. This group of seniors was unbelievably special. I know every class at every school wants to believe that about their seniors but in this case, this class truly lived up the word special. There is not a bad apple in the group. Each and every one made a contribution toward the state title they all aimed for. This group was being told from the time they were seventh graders that they were expected to be great and bring home a title. For them to live up to that standard and actually get that ring is simply awesome. The 9+ hours was time well spent and not a moment of it was overdone. Congrats Birds. You have made us all proud to be part of the Bluebird football family!

LN, your right about the Red Dog Dougherty award. The coaches couldn't have picked a better recipient than Joe Fitzgerald. Joe along with his brother and parents are some of the finest people you'd ever want to meet. Not many know this, but Joe turned down a full academic schlorship to enlist in the U.S. Navy last week. He's following his dream. I for one feel very fortunate that a courageous, talented and intellegent young man will protecting our Country. Congratulations Joe! :thumb:

Are there still season highlight DVDs available? If yes, how does one obtain a copy?

ABSOLUTELY agree with everything you said about Fitz and family. BUT...I still hold the Quinn Stapleton Award near and dear!

IF this is TRUE, please start a separate thread for it so Fitz can get the congrats he so well deserves! OUTSTANDING!!!

No reason to get blasted, some people just can't comprehend the passion attached to this program. I admit to being one of them and my son plays. Still, there was much celebrating to catch up on as there had been a 2 year drought since the last state championship! :D

I'm hoping to get my copy in the mail the couple of days:D
