January 23, 200818 yr And good parenting would be not letting their kids listen to any form of music, rap, rock, country, that has messages that are not positive ones. Wow, that would only rule out some of the most important and beautiful pieces of work in the rock canon. "Ohio" by Neil Young immediately comes to mind.

In my best Donald Sutherland of Dirty Dozen impression, "Never heard of it". Of course, this might make your ticker skip a bit but I couldn't tell you one song done by Neil Young.

January 23, 200818 yr I feel very, very sorry for you. And I mean that. Ever heard Toby Mac. He is good, very good.

Of course, this might make your ticker skip a bit but I couldn't tell you one song done by Neil Young. You might not have heard of it, but you've heard it if you've ever watched a documentary on the 60's. And it was written by Neil Young but was actually performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and released as a single in 1970. It's about the Kent State shootings. If you heard the chorus you would know the song. And I'm sure you've heard "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" and "Heart of Gold" if you've ever had it on an oldies station for 5 minutes. So while you may not "know" a Neil Young song, you know a Neil Young song.

So while you may not "know" a Neil Young song, you know a Neil Young song. In the liner notes of Decade Young mentions that after they did the final take on "Ohio" Crosby went over to the corner and cried. I remember a professor at EKU when I was there who had been at Kent State during the shootings. He was a poli sci teacher and only talked about it once. He knew the girl who was going from one class building to the other because the guard had pulled away and she thought it was safe to walk to the next building. She was wrong. Of all the protest songs "Ohio" was one of the most blatant about it's message and named names about who Young thought was responsible.
January 24, 200818 yr Hearsay post #11 was very good. I have several Neil Young cds and have seen him twice in person. "Ohio" tears me up. Ladies, like someone said..."Heart of Gold/Old Man"?
January 24, 200818 yr Never heard of him in my life. You may have heard of the Christian Rock band dcTalk that was popular in the 90's? They are essentially the Grandfathers of Modern Christian Rock/Pop after starting off as a Christian rap group. Their album "Jesus Freak" found mainstream success in the mid-90's and was actually really really good. Anyway TobyMac left dcTalk to go solo so that's where he came from. IMHO- thats where he should have stayed, I don't like his solo stuff at all. But he is a solo Christian pop/rap artist. I really haven't like any of the solo stuff the dcTalk guys have done, they were much better together. Of all those popular Christian bands in the early to mid-90's Jars of Clay are the only ones left that had any mainstream success after Audio Adrenaline retired last year. That should make them feel old. :jump: And me!
January 24, 200818 yr Knights In Satan's Service :lol:I remember that...and this gem... Anti-Christ/Devil's Children :sssh:

If I need the message that bad I have black gospel and bluegrass gospel music I can listen to. "South Park" really hit the nail on the head in their episode about the Christian Rock fad, IMO.
January 25, 200818 yr I think that music can only do this to you if you have the mindset that music can do this to you. Some people are just crazy, and listening to crazy music definately doesn't help. But it's not the music's fault. (Although some of it nowadays has gotten pretty 'out there')
January 26, 200818 yr Author :lol:I remember that...and this gem... Anti-Christ/Devil's Children :sssh: That would be AC/DC right. I really don't satan isn't in the music, he's in everyman in someway.
January 26, 200818 yr People for centuries read books for self-help, to expand their minds, and to educate themselves to new ideas and ways of thinking. To me, in some respects, the modern version of idea sharing and influencing is through music. Most people have read a book that has influenced them in one way or another, so why is it so hard to believe that music cannot have the same effect? Both positive and negative.
