I agree but for our area I think that (and I know I am gonna get alot of flak for this) but playing kids up and in front of players that have developed skills not only hurts the team if it is not handled right but it also hurts future players because, these are just kids even though they are older they are still kids, boys think if "bobby" did it why can't I.

 

Now I know there are kids that have exceptional talent and that are awesome players but all kids are different and some kids grow/develop skills late.

 

I know I am just rambling but this is something that I have seen more so with girls but in some situations with boys as well.

I also like strike3's suggestions.

IMHO the best solution would look like this -

 

Eliminate the bye week and 1st round of playoffs for football.

 

Move the start of basketball practice back until Nov. 1st.

 

Move the Sweet 16 for boys and girls back to the last week in March(this year would be the 22nd - 29th) and make the State BOE have all schools spring break the same week.

 

Play boys and girls games all in Lexington, games would look like this

 

Sat, 22nd 4 boys games, half 1st round

 

Sun, 23rd 4 girls games, half 1st round

 

Mon, 24th 4 boys games, half 1st round

 

Tues, 25th 4 girls games, half 1st round

 

Wed., 26th boys quarter finals

 

Thurs., 27th girls quarter finals

 

Fri., 28th Boys/Girls semifinals

 

Sat., 29th Boys/Girls Finals.

 

 

 

Or -

 

 

Mon, 24th 4 boys games Rupp, 4 girls games Memorial.

 

Tues, 25th 4 boys games, 4 girls games Memorial.

 

Wed., 26th boys quarter finals Rupp

Now your messing with baseball season. But I agree with you. It's normally still too cold for baseball anyway.

If the KHSAA could somehow devise a plan to separate the basketball schools into 4 divisions you could still have a Sweet 16. If you were to take the 4 best teams from each division, giving you the 16 best teams in the state. Have those teams play one another to determine the champion from each division.

 

On Saturday morning take the 4 division winners and have them play one another based on seeding and then the two winners would play Saturday night to determine the OVERALL state champion!

 

You could have your divisions broken into 4 regions and have each region winner advance to the state tourney. It would be similar to how Ohio does their regionals and sectionals!

 

This is just something a few buddies and I have discussed before. It keeps the tradition of the Sweet 16 alive and adds something new to the table!

Class all sports, including basketball. They used to shoot balls into a peach basket and have a jump ball after every made basket. Some people need to realize that it's OK to change things.

 

No shot clock. Teams have enough trouble running an offense now as it is. How does a shot clock improve the game other than put more points on the board. Does it matter if the final score is 95-91 or 40-38?

 

Better training and recruitment of officials. The state has been hit hard by retirements and defections to other sports and the overall talent pool of officials isn't what it used to be. Say what you want but having games continuously called by substandard officials leads to poor skills on the court.

 

Require every coach or AD in the state to submit scores and stats to the KHSAA scoreboard on a regular basis or face a fine. There is no excuse for a coach/AD not to submit stats for the statewide leaders. Why wouldn't you want to publicize a kid's achievements?

 

Either have 2-man officiating crews or 3-man crews. Quit flipping back and forth. The game flow is different with a 3-man crew than a 2-man crew. It needs consistency.

 

Crack down on "open gyms" in the summer and fall. We all know what is happening here.

I agree with The Scribe 1000% about the officials. The overall state of officials is down compared to just 5 seasons ago. I go to some games and wander how these guys are even officiating the game I am watching.

 

I couldn't have said it better myself regarding the officials. There needs to be standards for all official associations and the recruitment of young officials should be enhanced and teaching them the basics of how to be a good official.

Do away with the District tournaments and have just one big Regional tournament. Seed the top 4 teams and pick from there. It's not fair that some Districts are seeded and others are not anyway. How many times does the top two teams meet in the first round of the Districts. It has happened many times in the 9th Region. It doesn't make sense to me. We have one District that has one 5A school and four 1A schools. Another has three or four 5A schools. Some schools will never have a chance to play in a Regional tournament.

If you want to aid the recruitment of officals then 2 things must happen......

1. They must be paid better across the board
   
2. They must be shown more respect and/or appreciation across the board from schools and fans.
   

 

How many of you have made one of the following statement or one similar to an official? "I wouldnt do your job for any amount of money" or "I dont know why/how you guys do it, getting yelled at every night"

 

Dont you think the young guys that are being recruited to join the ranks have the same comments? You will see numbers steadily decrease until schools take a stand on how fans are allowed to behave in their gyms, fields etc...

Agree with the "open gym" statement. This policy needs to end. It's abused to no end. Start practice on the official start date, October 15th, instead of allowing coaches to use "open gym" as a way of circumventing the official start date.

Seed every District in the State....be consistent.

 

Pre-Season District Pan-O-Rama - Participating teams, share in a % of gate receipts and rotate each year, to those wanting to host.

 

Regional Tournament - Double elimination and single game Championship.

 

Timeouts - Only called by Players.

 

Regional Websites - All 16 Regions, have a website that includes, rosters, photos, results and information to help promote all Teams.

Shooting percentages are already abysmal in boys' and girls' HS basketball, and it would get much worse if there was a shot clock. And it's not like teams are playing four corners; most teams get their shots off in a reasonable amount of time. Once in a while you will see a team kill 1:00 to 1:30 of clock time at the end of a half or game.

 

A shot clock would not -- I repeat, WOULD NOT -- increase scoring.

I don't like this part of your idea at all. Some schools because of the nature of the roads in the communities have several snow days. Forcing them to take 5 days of spring break here could push their last day of school into June which now interferes with summer school for those teachers that are required to be finishing up their masters or working on their rank I.

 

It could also mess with seniors who want to get a jumpstart on their college career and start in the summer.

 

It could also mess with the local economies that rely on students for summer work.

 

This year we have 2 days for spring break, not 5.

On is it fair to girls'/boys'. No it is not for the simple reason, the girls would not nearly receive the coverage by radio/television/print if the boys' tournament is going on at the same time.

 

At least when they are the only show, the newspapers put the stories on the front page of the sports. Run the boys' at the same time and they will be pushed to the back.
