What needs to happen in boys basketball to make it a better game.

They have all but neglected the 10 to 15 ft shot and using the backboard is like committing a crime. .

In my 5th grade team's practice the other day, we were doing a shooting drill and despite my pleas for the past 5-8 practices of using the backboard they were not doing it to my pleasure.

I stopped the drill, reiterated the need to use the backboard and the spot they need to hit (coaches interlude for young coaches. don't just tell them to use the backboard because it is a large backboard. Don't tell them the square because if they are on the side and hit the middle of the square, they will miss the shot. Show them the exact spot to hit. I have even used small pieces of tape in the past.) and if they didn't, conditioning opportunity.

That means running. When they started running for not putting the ball on the backboard, it was amazing how much they started using the backboard. And then equally amazing on how many shots we began to make.:thumb:

Not with the JV game and games being played on school nights. On road games there are times the bus doesn't roll in till 11:00 as is. Lengthening the game makes students getting home even later. Expecially considering it might be a 14 year old playing up.

Not sure how long it takes on average, but wouldn't not having the time off between quarters kind of equal everything out?As far as the length of the game.

That is 2 minutes per game. 1 minute between 1st and 2nd. 1 minute between 3rd and 4th. And that is 2 minutes of actual time.

Compared to the addition of 8 minutes of clock play which would translate into what 20 minutes of actual time? And that is if you went with the two halves.

Go 4 10-minute quarters and you have adding 8 minutes of clock time and a possibility of 20 minutes of actual time while getting rid of none.

Instead of a game ending at 9:00, it comes closer to ending at 9:30. 30 minutes to get changed. Hour drive home NOT including if you stop to get something to eat and easily you are getting home at 11:30 to midnight.

I am all in Favor of a 45 second shot clock.:thumb:

I can see some of these points and why some don't like it,but I just think it is hard to argue that it would make kids better and prepare them better for the next level. Also if it was such a bad idea, then why does it work so good in other states?I mean every state has bad regions, sections, divisions, and teams, but I bet they wouldn't change for anything.

How many kids go to the next level? The big schools that should be classed as they are in football and start 4-5 seniors would not have much trouble with a shoot clock but the smaller schools that have more underclassmen than not, would be very troubled with it.

1st, you do away with open gym, you have to do away with football passing leagues and weightlifting in both basketball and football.

2nd I would love to see 2 20 minute halves, most school do not play far enough away for it to be a problem and if it is move the JV start time to 5:30.

3rd, I do not see how you guys think a shot clock would help anything? It would hurt.

4th length of season and football/basketball overlap has not been discussed by anyone except me.

Am I the only who sees this as a problem, that current SR.'s at a AAA school have missed an entire year of practice to due success in football?

I agree about the overlap. I know it is probably anathema to many, but it probably wouldn't be a bad thing to reduce the limit on the number of games per season and not allow the first game until perhaps mid-December.

I thought we were talking about making basketball a better game. Now you are talking about shortneing the numbers of games played and shortening the times teams have to develop.

As for your 2nd point, starting a JV game at 5:30 would be a problem. Usually boys and girls share the same gym. And if you have a JV game at 6 it usually gives the girls or boys time to practice until 5:30. If you made the JV game at 5:30 then the other team would have to be off the floor around 5, not giving adequate practice time.

Also, how would say a 45 second hurt anything? I went with a friend to the Toyota Classic tonight. I watched the 2nd half of Perry Central vs. Clay Co, before watching the next 2 games. The final score was 37-35. I would have given anything to see a shot clock during the game! Clay held the ball for the last 1:30 of the game and won with a jumper with 3 seconds left.

Your typical basketball season has more than a couple of meaningless games that could be trimmed away to cut down on the conflicts with athletes coming over from the football team. The more practice time these athletes get can only help make for a more-improved product on the floor come game time.

And do your math better. If we're backing up the first day of practice and subsequently backing up the first day of the regular season, where is the lost development time?

Why should basketball start later with football ending later and later? Basketball is having to make all the sacrifices. I think just about every bball coach out there would argue with you about there being meaningless games.

Most schools let out at 3-3:15.

A 1.5 hour practice in basketball is adequate a couple of times a week AFTER THE PRE-SEASON. If it is not you are not managing your time as a coach very well at all and risk burning your team out.

Start Nov. 1st, but cut out the bye week and 1st round of playoffs in football also. Now you are missing a month for football

Also push back the season 1 week or 2 and have girls/boys tourney's at the same time. You then get your 2 weeks back at the end.

Maybe they would on the record, but off the record's a different story.

And where did I say that basketball would make the only sacrifice? This is a hoops forum. But since you asked a gridiron question, I would like to see the bye week eliminated and the playoffs cut to where only the top two teams in the district make it to the postseason.

I'm finding myself agreeing with you on a number of things, but I disagree with having the boys and girls Sweet 16 at the same time. Like LBBC said, it would result in the girls being ignored by fans and the media in favor of the boys. But you're on point with many of your other suggestions.
