What needs to happen in boys basketball to make it a better game.

I am stealing this from LBBC in the girls forum.

My view.

Everything in this state that has been done for athletics has been geared to help football(great, they are bringing the level up), or girls sports in general(again great, they were neglected in the past). Nothing has been done for basketball.

I am a fan of Belfry and am very proud of the success we have had in football and the titles/state championship appearances. The problem is at a AA/AAA school the best athletes play a lot of sports. If you add the practice time missed from OCT. 15th until football players get in the current SR's have missed an ENTIRE SEASON. Think about that.

I think we need adjustment of BOTH football and basketball seasons to help this problem. I also feel officiating needs to be addressed in some way.

Please do no tun this into a classification debate or start another thread.. The Sweet 16 is here to stay.

I think that football season needs to be concluded by the first weekend in December. As it is, some football players at schools that go deep into the playoffs may feel they are so behind that they opt not to go out for basketball when the time comes to make a decision.

The other thing is summer ball. I really wonder if summer ball does more harm than good, although if I had to make a choice, I would generally rather have the athletes spending more time with their high school team than their AAU programs.

IMHO the best solution would look like this -

Eliminate the bye week and 1st round of playoffs for football.

Move the start of basketball practice back until Nov. 1st.

Move the Sweet 16 for boys and girls back to the last week in March(this year would be the 22nd - 29th) and make the State BOE have all schools spring break the same week.

Play boys and girls games all in Lexington, games would look like this

Sat, 22nd 4 boys games, half 1st round

Sun, 23rd 4 girls games, half 1st round

Mon, 24th 4 boys games, half 1st round

Tues, 25th 4 girls games, half 1st round

Wed., 26th boys quarter finals

Thurs., 27th girls quarter finals

Fri., 28th Boys/Girls semifinals

Sat., 29th Boys/Girls Finals.

Or -

Mon, 24th 4 boys games Rupp, 4 girls games Memorial.

Tues, 25th 4 boys games, 4 girls games Memorial.

Wed., 26th boys quarter finals Rupp

Thurs., 27th girls quarter finals Rupp

Fri., 28th Boys/Girls semifinals Rupp

Sat., 29th Boys/Girls Finals Rupp

Nothing, it's pretty good just the way it is.

45 second shot clock. Get rid of the 3 pointer at the grade school level.

I agree. I would like to see the shot clock. Also, the charge circle under the basket would be a good addition,IMHO. Officials have trouble making this call anyway, plus it's an injury waiting to happen.

Go to a class division tourney...just as in football.

The 3 point shot has ruined a lot of good young basketball players.

This would ABSOLUTELY ruin the state tourney as we know it.

Indiana went to this several years back and it has not been the same since..

For the fans, probably.

But for the kids that are seeing more opportunities and more chance at success and the honor of calling themselves state champions, I disagree.

But, isn't HS athletics supposed to be about the kids?

I don't think kids would feel any less about their state championship if it were classes. It would also help with basketball overall because, kids who know they don't have a shot to make the Sweet 16 would have a reason to work. You would see a big difference in overall talent in the state. There are some real good players out there that should be seen, but will not because of the way it is setup. But, having said all of that, I understand that it works the way it is.

Bolded are TWO GREAT POINTS!

If it were being done for the kids then the obvious choice would be classes. If it is done for money and tradition, then let it stay the way it is.

Seed every District in the State....be consistent.

Pre-Season District Pan-O-Rama - Participating teams, share in a % of gate receipts and rotate each year, to those wanting to host.

Regional Tournament - Double elimination and single game Championship.

Timeouts - Only called by Players.

Regional Websites - All 16 Regions, have a website that includes, rosters, photos, results and information to help promote all Teams.
