letabrotherspeak Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 than Wildcat. Very fair and balanced column written by Bozich. This should be sent to all color commentors and play by play people on the national scene, as well as the talking heads who said UK fans ran off Tubby. http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080117/COLUMNISTS01/801170447

There is honestly no reason to talk about this anymore, we all are trying to move on past this remember...
gametime Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 UK is not a coach 'em up job. It wasn't before Smith arrived. It isn't now that Smith is gone -- although Gillispie finds himself having to coach the Wildcats up considering the scraps Smith's meager recruiting left him. Tubby Smith is doing wonderful work at Minnesota, a job that fits his approach better than Kentucky ever did. Red flag alert for the new coach...
hardball Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 It read like a watered-down version of that Ira Combs fella that has his "opinion" tacked to the top of the forum. When a writer, professional or not, uses the old "Tubby won with Rick's players" argument, well, that's when I realize they're not worth reading because they have few, if any, valid points to make.
pigman Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 I've said this before I do not think Rick would've won the NC with the 98 team , and that Tubby did an amazing job coaching that team. Now my question is what Tubby recruit played any significant minutes on that team. The best I can remember is none, so yes they were Rick's players.
Jim Schue Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 I wonder if Michigan fans scorned Steve Fisher for winning an NC with "Bill Frieder's players?"
mobaar Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 I wonder if Michigan fans scorned Steve Fisher for winning an NC with "Bill Frieder's players?" Maybe you should ask Miami fans about Larry Coker.
Hasbeen Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 This may have been discussed before (I've not followed all the Tubby threads) but it occured to me as I watched the game last night how many coaches have their sons on staff. Knight, Sampson, Smith, even Pitino to name a few. With the memory of how Saul was treated as a player, Tubby's move to Minnesota may have at least partially been to allow him to further Saul's career without the micro scrutiny of UK.

I think that's a pretty fair assumption, however I wouldn't have had a problem with Saul coaching at UK. Lord knows he would've worked circles around Hanson or Rigot.

I've said it before, but I haven't seen anybody else give it much thought. I don't think it was the only reason, but I definitely think it was a consideration.

Now my question is what Tubby recruit played any significant minutes on that team. The best I can remember is none, so yes they were Rick's players. When Pitino left, they ceased being his players. They played Tubby's style of basketball, thus allowing them to win a national championship. That makes them Tubby's IMO...
ladiesbballcoach Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 I should write for a paper. I said this last year. Tubby is about coaching and teaching basketball. UK fans want top 10 recruits who can just run and shoot. That doesn't fit into Tubby's style. Tubby's style is about basketball and the way it was meant to be played.

There is honestly no reason to talk about this anymore, we all are trying to move on past this remember... :thumb: I will talk about Tubby Smith on threads about him and his team and I will talk about U.K. and Gillispie on the U.K. threads, I am a huge fan of both U.K. and Tubby Smith. As for all the comparisons and constant Tubby vs. U.K. talk..........."Dead Horse Award"...............
