There is no right to serve in the military nor is there a right to employment in this country. The military and private employers reject applicants for a multitude of reasons every day in this country. Gay people do not deserve a protected class status any more than left-handed females do.

 

We have rights not to be discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, etc. Gays (who are totally qualified for military service) cannot serve openly but undocumented immigrants can. A gay person can be denied employment in some states for no other reason other than their sexuality. This still doesn't answer my previous question. Who does this protect?

Agreed - but no right exists for anybody to serve in the military. The military exists to protect this nation and its citizens and it should not be made into a laboratory for social engineering.

While I am not a fan of labels (conservative or liberal) most would group me under the conservative label.

I would say many of the things you listed above fall under the conservative mantra (at least for me)

 

Care of the environment== I care, I am just not a fan of mandates

Care for the poor== I care and give, just not a supporter of the government mandating that I do this.

Visit the prisoner===I visit prisoners (along with many other conservatives)

Feed the hungry == Once again I give to those in need. Just not a fan of the government taking my money from me to "give"

 

Wealth redistribution == big diferrence between being taxed and "giving" to the poor.

I would say that "Liberal" and "Conservative" are very relative terms. "Liberal" thinkers in todays political/social environment dont believe or disagree with the same issues/ideas as their "liberal" counterparts in 1850- vice versa for conservatives. Liberal, by definition, means free to make decisions. So I think that the term "liberal" doesnt necessarily reflect a set of ideals but a mindset to think differently than what is represented in common thought. So under this understanding both Democrats and Republicans- any other political party for that matter- could be termed "Liberal".

I was always told that liberal's wanted change and conservatives wanted the status quo. I think the classes of being liberal and conservative are titles that are put into place by the wealthy people that are on the news that wants people to follow an idea or a set of ideas. Bill O'Reilly, Rush, Hannity, Matthews, Keith Obmerman, so on so on. They are trying to seel there book, shows. I think most people are trying to do the same thing in our lives and that is to try to survive, teach our kids the best way to become adults and not go crazy or crack up. We all have different opinions on abortion, capital punishment, and gay rights. I am against abortion and I have personal reasons for that but I think it is an individual right to choose. I don't know if I have a strong stance on capital punishment. I believe gays should be able to be married and they should have same right as any other couple. The fact about Jesus and his views is I think all of you bring up great things but that is not how we are supposed to make our descions. We are supposed to seperate church and state. But as a country we don't do that very well. Both sides right and left bring things to the table that are very troubling. Our budget is going to get us in trouble and being in a war that is costing us money is bad. We have many problems at home that need to be taken care of.

I was put up for adoption before abortion was made legal and I wonder what if. Maybe that might be a selfish reason but that is why. I think adoption is the best way. Many people can't have kids that can raise these kids that these people don't want. I think we should look at that more.

Agreed :thumb: From that standpoint, I'm not sure why you support abortion outside of yourself, but I can't disagree with the above.

I just think it is the person's choice and I am not big on the government telling people what to do. Outlawing abortation is government control IMO. I don't support but don't think is my right or anybody else's to make that descions for other people.
