ladiesbballcoach
Let's go to the other side of the spectrum, what stances on issues do you have to have to be considered a liberal? I would assume Supporter of Abortion rights Supporter of marriages between homosexuals and I would assume other combinations if you don't want to deny it to homosexuals. I know people who I would call very liberal that don't support one or the other and even a few that don't support either. There isn't as dogmatic a classification for liberalism as there is for conservatism.

I think we use the term with OUR definition or view of someone but the person we are talking to has a different idea of a liberal/conservative. 02Ram54
Why do you call them liberal then? Exactly what I was trying to do with this thread. I think we use the term with OUR definition or view of someone but the person we are talking to has a different idea of a liberal/conservative. The people I'm thinking of are liberal for a variety of stances. Some are strongly in favor of social programs, others for wealth redistribution, others are very anti-war, and I didn't include anyone in my thinking who wouldn't consider themselves liberal. IM4THEHOUNDS
Let's go to the other side of the spectrum, what stances on issues do you have to have to be considered a liberal? I would assume Supporter of Abortion rights Supporter of marriages between homosexuals and I would assume other combinations if you don't want to deny it to homosexuals. Food for thought: (keep in mind the bolded items are meant to be tongue in cheek for those that might be easily offended;)) 1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand. 2. You have to believe that businesses create oppression and governments create prosperity. 3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are more of a threat than nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and North Korean communists. 4. You have to believe that there was no art before Federal funding. 5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by documented cyclical changes in the earth's climate and more affected by Soccer moms driving SUV's. 6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being homosexual is natural. 7. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of Federal funding. 8. You have to believe that the teacher who can't teach fourth graders how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex. 9. You have to believe that hunters don't care about nature, but loony activists who have never been outside of San Francisco do. 10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it. 11. You have to believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of his own money to make "The Passion of the Christ" for financial gain only. 12. You have to believe the NRA is bad because it supports certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution. 13. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high. 14. You have to believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. 15. You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas and affirmative action are not. 16. You have to believe that Hillary Clinton is normal and is a very nice person. 17. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge. 18. You have to believe conservatives telling the truth belong in jail, but a liar and a sex offender belonged in the White House. 19. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag queens, transvestites and bestiality should be constitutionally protected, but that manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal. 20. You have to believe that illegal Democrat Party funding by the Chinese Government is somehow in the best interest to the United States. 21. You have to believe that this message is a part of a vast, right wing conspiracy. 22. You have to believe that it's okay to give Federal workers the day off on Christmas Day..........but it's not okay to say "Merry Christmas." Ready to vote???

HHSDad
I think the stereotypical liberal has these attributes: 1) Believes the government can cure all woes. 2) Wants everything and everyone regulated, except for... 3) His/her self. Then the government needs to mind its own business.
MoreheadEagle
I'll just state what I believe in as little space as possible. 1. The government's first job is to serve and protect the citizens 2. There's nothing wrong with large corporations but there need to be regulations in place to protect workers, the public, and their environment. 3. Healthcare is a right. I get this from my religious beliefs. 4. The government should not sponsor any religious organizations 5. Abortions should be safe, legal, and limited 6. Homosexuals have all the rights and privileges garunteed by the constitution.
acemona
Peacemaking, not War Making: Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [Matthew 5:9] Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [Matthew 5:39] I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you; [Matthew 5:44] The Death Penalty: Thou shalt not kill [Matthew 5:21] Crime and Punishment: If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to cast a stone at her. [John 8:7] Do not judge, lest you too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. [Matthew 7:1 & 2.] Justice: Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness(better interpreted Justice): for they shall be filled. [Matthew 5:6] Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy [Matthew 5:7] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. [Matthew 6:15] Corporate Greed and the Religion of Wealth: In the temple courts [Jesus] found men selling cattle, sheep and doves and other sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. [John 2:14 & 15.] Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. [Luke 12.15.] Truly, I say unto you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. [Matthew 19:23] You cannot serve both God and Money. [Matthew 6:24.] Paying Taxes & Separation of Church & State: Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. [Matthew 22:21] Community: Love your neighbor as yourself. .[Matthew 22:39] So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you. [Matthew 7:12.] If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. [Matthew 19:21] Equality & Social Programs: But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. [Luke 14:13 &14.] Public Prayer & Displays of Faith: And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret… [Matthew 6:6 & 7] Strict Enforcement of Religious Laws: If any of you has a son or a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? [Matthew 12:11] The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. [Mark 2:27.] Individuality & Personal Spiritual Experience: Ye are the light of the world.
