2008 Whitley County

Featured Replies

I saw a pic in the paper which identified one of the players as Jason Powers, looks like he is still at Whitley. It seems like you can't believe any of the rumors around the water cooler anymore.

Did Whitley get new helmets, they looked like plain black hemets in the paper and they always wore white hemets with stripes and a red W under Campbell and the first two years under Black.....Ahhhh I see Coach Black and Black Helmets. Guess Coach Black is going no frills.

Good to see that the rumors were not true about Jason Powers!

Im pretty sure Coach Campbell had some Black Helmets in his tenure also.

I am pretty sure that Black was at Whitley when they ran a version of the option, when they went away from their Wing-T. I had heard that the Wing-T may make a re-appearance out at the county.

It looks like spring ball is only a few days away. I have heard that some kids are departing from the team and some other kids are going to have to step in and take over. Does any body know what players are playing what positions? Specifically in the back field.

I heard Jones and Powers will be getting a bulk of the carries in the backfield with Ryder at QB. Alex Patrick was playing widereciever. I am not sure what they have for lineman, but I understand they are supposed to be much improved. I think Whitley has a lot to be excited about, but I thought the same thing last year with Lebannon playing QB.

I don't think at this point you could even guess who is going to get the bulk of the carries. It is too early and Jones has yet to take a snap in the backfield. With all the fast cars in his garage, Coach Black could have 3 or 4 backs with alot of carries and alot of yards. Regardless I am sure that you will see Jones with ball, Powers with the ball, Rider with the ball, Patrick with the ball, Bramlett with the ball, Bowlin with the ball, in fact the only guys who might not get the ball will be the Bull Doziers up front.

With that much talent, could Whitley be looking for more than a district title this year? At this point, you have to think a winning record and a home playoff game would be huge for Whitley. I believe they will be the most talented team in their district. What does Whitley's schedule look like.

Whitley will be talanted no doubt about that and they were young last year, but so were several other teams that was on their schedule. Unless they have jumped into a time machine that will move them ahead of the competition they should make about the same progression as those other teams. BUT with a new offense (?) they could be a serious threat to do some damage to other teams, but the question remains whether they will have the team chemistry to make the jump from pretender to contender.......

The X factor will be who is truely calling the offense and the defense. I understand that Cotton Adams is no longer a part of the staff and has been replaced by a young untested coach from Corbin. IF Jim Black has replaced Cotton Adams with a good replacement and Bobby Gibbs can get a handle on the offense then Jim Black can finally be a head coach and over see the team.

There has been alot of talk about offense and it has all be interesting but what about the Red Storm defense? How many kids do they have that can step in and play at the level they will need to make a run at the playoffs. What kind of defense are they going to run? If you belive the rumors they are going to be 50 team, with lots of speed on the cornors.

Hey ST5 let in on the secrets.........

Wow, Whitley sounds loaded! I believe in 5A ball though, a team would need to be 50/50 on the offense, because most teams have all kinds of "fast cars", well outside of Whitley's district anyway! I wish Coach Black luck, but, I don't see much turn around, 5A ball is exactly that 5A ball, I don't care if Whitley did play in one of the worst districts in 5A! With all that said good luck coach

Well not eveyone can play single A football.......

If you had bothered to watch the Colonels last year you would have seen just how close they were to serious sucess. The Whitley game with Letcher was a gift to the Cougars and they won the region, and the Colonels should have won that one so for them to make the jump is not out of reach.

Do I hear just a tad bit of the green monster coming out.......I can understand that being the little brother to the county.

Whitley is loaded and has a unusual amount of team speed for most teams at any level. Are there faster teams probably but overall their team speed will be able to match up with just about any team on their schedule. You dont have to be 50/50 on offense, you better be good at what you do. You say worst district I really dont know how you determined that. What is your formula? Whitley needed to create more strength and speed to compete at the 5A level and that is what they have done. Strength punishes, speed kills.

Don't see any green monster coming out in Fundmental. I think he is just going by past history. I too wish Whitley the best of luck, but let's face it the post that were made for Whitley's 2007 year were about the same and well we all know how that turned out. That being said "Best of luck Colonels!":p

Did Whitley play a single A school last year? After that game are you sure you would want to be a single A school.

LoL, didn't a single A school beat "the big brother last year", facts are facts, they would have come in forth in a single A district, based upon what they did last year.

However, that was last year, this year Whitley will be better! I am sorry that it bothers people that they play in a 5A district, like I said before I wish them luck, just, don't expect miracles! Until, they can get down to playing 3A ball, they will struggle, making it past the second round. But then again second round playoffs, are all what some people shoot for! So good luck to that!

I agree with this statement! I hope that you are right in your assessment! Again, did not mean to ruffle any feathers, just pointing out has happened in the past!

As far as being balanced, the game has changed, if you are not balanced you will struggle, probably not in the regular season, but in the post season, where as I am sure that you know that is all that really matters

Not everyone can play 1A because most have to many students. I'm not sure why anyone would be envious of the Whitley situation. Expectations where high going into last year and things didnt workout no matter how close they were to serious success. Expectations appear to be high again this year. Hope this time next year Whitley is talking about how successful instead of how close. Good luck to Coach Black and the Colonels and Coach Herron and the Jackets. :ylsuper:
