2008 Whitley County

Featured Replies

Well not eveyone can play single A football.......

If you had bothered to watch the Colonels last year you would have seen just how close they were to serious sucess. The Whitley game with Letcher was a gift to the Cougars and they won the region, and the Colonels should have won that one so for them to make the jump is not out of reach.

Do I hear just a tad bit of the green monster coming out.......I can understand that being the little brother to the county.

How was this a gift to the Cougars? We won at their place and we won here.

Letcher was the best team in the district and they proved that on the field. Although Whitley did play them close in both games and had opportunities to win, Letcher found a way to win. What does Whitley need to do to turn the tables, one thing for sure is stop Banks, who might be one of the most underated and overlooked QBs in the state.

Well I guess you both are right but that was the past, now, I am more concerned with what is going to be going on out at the county in the future. Who are going to be the big dogs on the defensive side of the football?

I believe the only true loss on the defensive side of the ball was Shawn Baird. He will be difficult to replace. Most of the defense remians intact. Key players (big dogs) last year were Jones, Bramlett, Nate Wilson, Dotson, and Wynn. There are a few more that I can't remember the names of, but I know they were young and will be back.

As far as being balanced, the game has changed, if you are not balanced you will struggle, probably not in the regular season, but in the post season, where as I am sure that you know that is all that really matters

The game has not changed, it still boils down to the basics. Blocking and Tackling, etc. As far as balance there are all types of it in Football. It is a term that is usually thrown around by people who believe they know

alot more about football than everyone else. No team has ever been 50/50. Most teams will lean towards what they can do best regardless of class, schedule or post season.

As far as the regular season not mattering. What is the purpose of trying to win all you district games? I do believe that matters.

The first bolded part, how do you explain the west coast offense?

I do agree to the second bolded part more like 60/40.

So, you are telling me you would rather win 8 ball games next regular season, and lose in the second round. Or would win 6 to 7 ball games in the regular season and win the region?

So which one does matter?

That is a rhetorical question!

Whitley will be talanted no doubt about that and they were young last year, but so were several other teams that was on their schedule. Unless they have jumped into a time machine that will move them ahead of the competition they should make about the same progression as those other teams. BUT with a new offense (?) they could be a serious threat to do some damage to other teams, but the question remains whether they will have the team chemistry to make the jump from pretender to contender.......

The X factor will be who is truely calling the offense and the defense. I understand that Cotton Adams is no longer a part of the staff and has been replaced by a young untested coach from Corbin. IF Jim Black has replaced Cotton Adams with a good replacement and Bobby Gibbs can get a handle on the offense then Jim Black can finally be a head coach and over see the team.

There has been alot of talk about offense and it has all be interesting but what about the Red Storm defense? How many kids do they have that can step in and play at the level they will need to make a run at the playoffs. What kind of defense are they going to run? If you belive the rumors they are going to be 50 team, with lots of speed on the cornors.

Hey ST5 let in on the secrets.........

Phil Russell is whom you are referring to. He has been with Pulaski co and East Jessamine prior to coming to Whitley. He doesnt have the years of experience Cotton Adams has but I wouldnt say he is untested.

The West Coast Offense.....easy to explain, it is a part of the game that has changed, it has not changed the game. If you run the West Coast offense and score 100 point but you can't tackle and your opponent scores 120 you still lose. The basics never change, if you can't block and tackle then you won't win games. Pretty Simple.

Yes I will take winning 8 games in the regular season becuase you are more than likely going to get a higher seed in the playoffs thus improving your chances of winning more games in the playoffs.

ST5 makes some very valid points.

But seriously I am curious to hear more on the Colonels not some Jacket fan trying to belittle them.

Has Coach Black settled on the replacements, has the new coach settled in with the kids? Oh The Drama.......

Thanks for the info....

Was Coach Russell at Pulaski when they had those good teams a couple of years back? What were his duties at East Jessimine?

You explain the West Coast Offense. I know nothing about it. I said comes down to basics or fundamentals. You of all people surely know this.

Your the one that said Whitley needed to be 50/50 to be successful, I merely pointed out that was a absurd statment. I also pointed out the fallacies in your statement.

You also said the regular season does not matter and that was incorrect. I believe every team would like home field advantage during the play offs and this is accomplished during regular season play. Which I am sure Whitley would enjoy if they were able to get this.

As for your rhetorical question, I said what I said and nothing else. You are the one that seems to have all the knowledge about the game and I am sure you have a answer to your own question.

Thanks for the info....

Yes, He was at Pulaski Co a few years back assisting on offense for 3 years when Pulaski was rolling. He coached UK tight end Tyler Sexton his jr & sr year when Pulaski was putting up 48 pts per contest. At East Jessamine he was Defensive Coordinator for 2 years and also Head Coach on JV. He also Coached Middle school basketball at Pulaski co and East Jessamine. If you are a Whitley co fan I believe you have alot to look forward to the next couple of years with the Coaching and Talant that is in place.

Go Colonels, Black helmets, bring back some old memories.......

Those were some great Colonel Teams, Can Whitley go all Black in their uniform the way they did back in those days. I cant remember if they had black pants last year? I know the black jerseys brought back memories.:ylsuper:

I did not see the Black Jersey, I did see them in all white, and that did not work out too well for them. I really did not like the uniforms that they had been wearing, way too colorful, I think that need to get back to old school football and uniforms. Maybe that would help turn things around for the Colonels.
