2008 Whitley County

Featured Replies

Well I think the bottom line with Whitley is this. They just need to keep improving on offense and defense. The last three season have not gone well, but they were in almost every ball game except for the Lynn Camp game. I am sure Coach Black and his staff will coach just as hard as always and it will get turned around in the near future. I think the teams in there district are pretty even with them. So a quick turn around is very possible. I still would like to know, Who is the offensive coordinator? I have asked several people but no one seems to be able to tell me.

Apex, I never expected you to admit it. Last years offense for the Storm was what it was.

They were forced to throw, but when they threw, it opened up their offense a little. I don't know how many times that LC was in the backfield when the direct snap/non-traditional plays went off, but it was a lot. If they were "forced" to throw, this goes against everything that Jim Black did at Williamsburg. LC was prepared, but Whitley moved the ball on pass plays and traditional run plays, but lost yardage all night on the untraditional stuff they tried to run.

If he could get his offense going at the Burg, the personnel have to be in Whitley to get the same thing going by numbers alone.

And, yes, I do admit losing Joe hurt us, but losing anyone hurts us due to numbers. A school the size of Whitley with the numbers they can turn out should still be able to move the ball when someone is unavailable, albeit without the same success, but production shoulds not drop off entirely due to the loss of a player at a program that size.

And, yes I do agree with you. The D will get better, but I think they did a decent job last year, also. Even in the LC game, they held their ground somewhat but got burned on some long runs. I think this is where people will see a better Colonels team at.

We are big fans of Coach Black, but honestly I don't think he will be able to run the same offense at Whitley that he did at Williamsburg for a while yet. You have to remember the talent he had at QB while there. Any Andy Greer's or Thomas Fraziers coming up through the middle school program? Also Williamsburg reps the passing game to death at practice, and the entire coaching staff is involved. It takes awhile for all the coaches to understand the concepts. I don't think the Franklin stuff he tried will work well at Whitley, but I do think eventually, a QB that can throw consistently can and will be developed. I think the Whitley faithful need to be patient and let Him grow the system.

We hear all the rumours about putting the veer in, and run and shoot, and all else, but lets face it the key will be having a QB that can read in any of these. Heck Wing T and Pro I with the power game are about the only offenses left that don't require a QB reading the D. I guess all I am really saying is I hope everyone will give Jim the opportunity to get things going at the County.

Whitley did move the ball well against Lynn Camp and was inside the Red Zone a few times but I remember they did things to hurt themselves when they were there, or the good play of Lynn Camp stopped them.

As for losing players Whitley suffer after the loss of Lebaninon, but the offense still was productive just not in the Red Zone. If we look at total yardage gained for a season this was probably one of their more productive years against stiffer competition than faced in the past!

Whitley was better than they were a year ago, although record does not indicate. With alot of players returning with experience look for them to be even better this year.

One thing is for sure....

Whitley is committed to winning, and they are going to win. They have not had the success that they wanted to the last two years but rebuilding takes time and fans need to understand and not just look at it from a wins and loses stand point. Whitley improved last year and will get even better this year. They could have had a really decent record but had some bad luck, but even that can't last for ever.

Not at all taking a shot at the program, but how many district, region titles has the school won? Again, just curious:confused:

Very few and fair between in all sports. But they are committed to winning. SO that may change next year or the year after that or.....

I think they have won one District Title in football. I do not think they ever won one in 3A. Bell Co always dominated that district. Then Rockastle came in and won some titles. I just can not find where Whitley has won one untill they moved into 4A (won a district title that first year they moved into the 4A district). I think by far the district they are currently playing in is very weak (compared to former competition). I think that is why there were such high expectations last year. Look for Whitley to get this thing turned around quick. A district title is very attainable. I also think they should win there annual rivalry game with Lynn Camp.

I believe one in the early 80's with Schaefer, 2001. There are no traditional powers in the new district, but some fine few football teams. The non-district schedule was beefed up to prepare a young team.

It don't matter how many boys you have in a school, if they are not willing to do the things it takes..... You can't put a kid in there that never shows up for practice or is not willing to make him self better his team better by doing things like getting in the weight room in the off season..... You can have an all boy school of 5000, but only so many will do what it takes..... The kids that are willing to do that are your football players, they are the ones you see on friday night...... Whitley will be victorious

go Colonels

I have heard that Whitley won one in the 80's. What year did that take place in? The next one will come next year, wait and see!!!

Whitley won their district in '79 and I was there to watch them play Conner for the region....and get beat.

Certainly Whitley does not have the tradition or history of some other schools and you can make your jokes about next year but Whitley was one of the winningest programs in the 90's never having a losing season, the were of only a hand full of teams to do that. Being committed to winning is doing the things that make you a winner. Whitley is doing that and you all will see shortly just how committed they are.

As long as the boys are as committed as the coaches they will be fine, and there is no doubt that they are, and I look forward to spring, the passing leagues and then of course the season.

Who was making a joke? It is not going to take a big turn around for them to win their district. I thought they had a loosing season in 93. I do not know what their record was in 94, but I know they had to forfeit some games for playing an ineligible player. In 95 and there after they became very tuff and that pretty much lasted untill 3 or 4 yrs ago. I do not think anyone is trying to take anything away from Whitley's past. I think most people are pointing out what needs to be done next year. There has obviously been something wrong the past 3 seasons, but I think things will get turned around next year. Thanks for pointing out the other year Whitley one a district title.

According to the KHSAA records they did not forfiet any games when Eugene Smith was playing, so they did not have a losing season in the 90's. They did face some other sanctions including loss of some scrimmages. Also the joke part was not directed at you, I was however answering your question. What has been wrong has kind of been the perfect storm of bad things that could have happened. The thing through the 90's they had continueity, and now with Coach Black entering his third year, they are headed back in the right direction.

In all honesty the past is just that the past, it has no bearing on what is going to happen from now until next season....The coaches and the players are not looking at the past and only focused on the future, when in reality began the first week of November.
