2008 Whitley County

Apex, I never expected you to admit it. Last years offense for the Storm was what it was.

They were forced to throw, but when they threw, it opened up their offense a little. I don't know how many times that LC was in the backfield when the direct snap/non-traditional plays went off, but it was a lot. If they were "forced" to throw, this goes against everything that Jim Black did at Williamsburg. LC was prepared, but Whitley moved the ball on pass plays and traditional run plays, but lost yardage all night on the untraditional stuff they tried to run.

If he could get his offense going at the Burg, the personnel have to be in Whitley to get the same thing going by numbers alone.

And, yes, I do admit losing Joe hurt us, but losing anyone hurts us due to numbers. A school the size of Whitley with the numbers they can turn out should still be able to move the ball when someone is unavailable, albeit without the same success, but production shoulds not drop off entirely due to the loss of a player at a program that size.

And, yes I do agree with you. The D will get better, but I think they did a decent job last year, also. Even in the LC game, they held their ground somewhat but got burned on some long runs. I think this is where people will see a better Colonels team at.

I do not think Coach Black runs the same offense as he did at the Burg. When we played Whitley this season they ran more of a power offense out of the gun. That is not what he ran at the Burg with Greer. The used the gun formation but not as a power set.

The pass plays are called the same way even the run to some extent. Black's biggest threats were his backs. He only had one true reciever with Rider. So the offense was adapted to fit the personnell. Let's face it McCumbers is no Greer. When Lebanion went out it limited the Colonels, and took alot of the option game away.

Who would be QB in 2008 if Labanion { for 1 reason or another } where not in the game and how would it change the offense this year.

Big ? With all the Running backs Powers, Jones, Wynn, Bowlin, Bramlett, Patrick. What do you think? I believe they need to be predominantly run. They do have a nice QB in the Inman kid, but he will only be a sophmore.

Will they run out of the same sets as last year. They ran mid-line in the playoff game some I believe.Thats 6 runnung backs you mentioned. Will they spread the field and try and throw to these guys also.

Don't be surprised to the the Power I or the Wishbone or even the wing-bone, with all those backs to choose from, also look for a two tight-end set and the double-pig set similiar to what Corbin ran in the 80's. They have the line to go back to the true power game. Whitley will still throw the ball, with the likes of Rider to throw to, regardless of being away from the "spread" you will still have to cover the whole field. Heck Whitley may throw it as much as 7 times a game.

That type of "O" seems to work for Bell Co. and Belfry every year.

You are right but the Colonels got small across the line for a period of time but are recovering nicely now and are ready to get "In The Pile"

If Whitley is going to have success in their class outside of their district they will have to have a very balanced offense. I would say honestly to compete they would need to do a 60/40 run based offense.

Certainly Whitley does not have the tradition or history of some other schools and you can make your jokes about next year but Whitley was one of the winningest programs in the 90's never having a losing season, the were of only a hand full of teams to do that.

Who was making a joke? It is not going to take a big turn around for them to win their district. I thought they had a loosing season in 93. I do not know what their record was in 94, but I know they had to forfeit some games for playing an ineligible player. In 95 and there after they became very tuff and that pretty much lasted untill 3 or 4 yrs ago. I do not think anyone is trying to take anything away from Whitley's past. I think most people are pointing out what needs to be done next year. There has obviously been something wrong the past 3 seasons, but I think things will get turned around next year. Thanks for pointing out the other year Whitley one a district title.

They were 5-5 in 93 then went 7-4 in 94,10-2 in 95 ,9-3 in 96, then went 3 or more 8-3 seasons

Caoch Campbell had a good run during his time there...

What about the lebannon kid, will he not be back next season?

How are the players looking in the weightroom thus far? I have heard that there are some players looking real good.

The Colonels are starting to reap the rewards of continous hard work in the wt. room. We will see even a stronger team this coming year, they are also working on speed and quickness.

From what I have heard there are some exceptionally strong kids and but they still have some work to do. The coaches are driving the kids to get stronger and better and the kids are responding better than anybody could have hoped for. I will say one thing this is one hard working group of kids and they are chomping at the bit to get out for spring practice to get their feet on the grass and see just how their hard work has paid off.
