The whole "proud to be a southerner" thing begs another question. Where does it come from? Is it surplus Confederate subnationalism?

 

 

Again, I still think it is natural to root from where you are from. I am a native Kentuckian, and proud to be. If I am anywhere else, one of the first questions people ask is where are you from. Friendly chatter stays as such and most people will hype up their own state, debunking any myths that all of us are rednecks, marry our sisters, etc. Same if you are out out of the country. You defend not only the state you are from, but the nation you are apart of. Conference rooting is just that on a different level.

For what it's worth about people talking about "Northerners" not being proud of where they're from, you clearly have never dealt with New Yorkers.

I don't get it either. At the Music City Bowl the UK fans started canting "SEC, SEC, SEC" and I didn't understand it. I hate every other team in the SEC...especially when Kentucky is playing them. I guess the only reason I would even consider wanting another SEC team to win is to make UK look better...

With the Catholic schools here in Louisville we are actually more of a community that grows up together. Guys I went to grade school with went to St.X while I went to Trinity. We grow up together, we play together and against each other our whole lives. Our families know each other, generations of our families know each other and have traditions of playing or participating in our communities.

 

It is a level of brotherhood that and closeness that cannot happen when people from as many disparate backgrounds only compete with each other in sports. You find this sort of thing in an individual school community but to find a conference bonded in that same way? Nope, not buying it.

Don't get me wrong, I have my own loyalties. I am a Shamrock first and foremost and I pull for the Catholic schools at every level possible so I suppose you could look at me just as oddly. I always want the Rocks to win or, barring that, St.X to win. In college I will pull for the Irish.

 

 

Even so, my reasons are because I am Catholic and I feel that the common bond through the Roman Catholic Church to be something that is important. Unifying and universal, I am not about to post the Nicene Creed here, but the sort of thing that I found in the Catholic community here I have seen in other Catholic communities throughout the area (Ohio and Indiana come to mind). A bond of common culture and faith if you would.

I don't hate every other team in the SEC. I hate Florida and Tennessee, especially in basketball. But I root for the rest of the SEC when there arent playing UK.

I think it's the same as in HS football. I am loyal to my alma mater and despise the other teams in our district. That is until playoff time, then I root for all NKY teams that make it deep in the post season. Just a regional thing.

The New Yorkers I've dealt with couldn't give a hoot about the rest of the North, or the South, East or West either. Heck they think the only part of the nation that matters is New York. Talk about self absorbed. They're the worst in my opinion and make pro-South southerns look pretty good. The only other folks that come close are Texans.

The New Yorkers I have dealt with were similar but they exhibited some of the pro-North attitude. Of course it could have been an anti-South attitude too that I just figured to be a Pro-North.

Well I think the SEC started this when they starting missing out on National championship games. Whining about having a playoff game and not finishing undefeated.

LSU: The team UK beat earlier this season? (Which will make UK look better if the Tigers win).

But WHY a conference? Why not just a team?!? I have TEAMS I am loyal to, not conferences. I don't look at the NFL and pull only for the AFC North or the NFC West. The players play for a team not for the conference, that is why I have a hard time understanding this concept of pulling for the conference. Doesn't matter which one.
