While the bottom of the roster needs an upgrade, UK has plenty of talent to win games... Good post and research. I can't fo the life of me put my finger on what's wrong with this team. I guess that it's just a stems from the coaching change and injuries. I hope that Gillispie is the right guy for the job. I just hope that he realizes that re-building doesn't have to be done. UK has won 20 plus games and made the NCAA for a while now. The "turnaround" as he is use to, is not needed.
January 2, 200818 yr I agree GT and it seems, for whatever reason, this group of Players and Coaches, can't get on the same page in games, as they do in practice. Injuries are a factor but Senior leadership must be much more consistent, limit turnovers as a team and find some players, who want to rebound. You can't live behind the arc and hope Patterson, does it all.

How about taking the same list and give them stars for what they have done since coming to Lexington. The only one with an accurate rating IMHO is PP. I will hold off on Jasper, Carter and Meeks since they have played very little this year. All the rest have underachieved so far.
January 2, 200818 yr I didn't think you bought into those recruiting rankings, GT. A few things: 1) You've got a team with only 2 upperclassmen (I'm not counting Carter) 2) Until Jasper got back there was no legit point player. 3) There is no good center, and not a tough enough guy beside PP to fill out the inside. So you've basically seen a team that can fill 3 spots on the floor well, and has been struggling at the other two. Luckily, Jasper has returned to fill the more important of those two voids. Stevenson/Stewart/Coury/Carter(?) can fill the last spot, and all should improve with time.
January 2, 200818 yr Author High school rankings are recruiting tools and don't mean much when they start college. Show me a roster with 5 top 100 players in their class and I'll show you a team better than San Diego. While your point is taken, the "UK doesn't have any talent" cries are off base...
January 3, 200818 yr Author I didn't think you bought into those recruiting rankings, GT. I don't think they are the be all, end all, but they are an indication of talent level in the program. There are plenty of reasons UK is having trouble, but IMO a depleted roster isn't one of them. I've seen what depleted looks like, and this ain't it...
January 3, 200818 yr I think injuries and lack of quality leadership is the main problem for the Cats.
January 3, 200818 yr Author I think injuries and lack of quality leadership is the main problem for the Cats. I think that's a reasonable explanation...
January 3, 200818 yr There's plenty of talent in the backcourt, but almost zero "talent" up front. Some of these guys just flat out haven't panned out. But I agree that there is no reason to lose to San Diego...

A depleted roster is PART of the problem. They're certainly enough talent to beat GW and USD, but I don't know about Houston or UAB. Again, its been the lack of talent at key positions (the point in particular) that has been the problem more than the overall lack of ranked players. Also a lack of experienced players of any capability.
January 3, 200818 yr ^So you think UAB and Houston have players that are higher rated than that collectively?
