Oprah and the 'New Age Bible'

Featured Replies

I agree:

Every sunday people get up, put on their niecest clothes and shoes ,file into gas drinking suv's, drive past jails, orphanages, and homeless shelters, and go to a building where someone teaches them to be more Christ like.

I see no logic in that.

Would you prefer they stay home and watch football?

If you are a Christian, then you must believe that works without faith are nothing more than filthy rags in the eyes of God.
Surely, it works both ways.

I think he would prefer they stop at the jails, orphanages, and homeless shelters. ;)

Always easier to devert attention away from the real issue, isn't it?

I wonder if many who are upset with Oprah have the same disdain and castigation for Mr. Jefferson?

Thomas Jefferson actually comprised his own Bible by dissecting the parts that he disagreed with or felt were not true. I actually read a book about the process that I think was entitled "Mr. Jefferson's Bible."

My point is that this is nothing new. Even to the debates about what was canon and what was not. (See Marcion from the 4th century) Some of the reformers (i.e. Luther) had such problems with some texts and books in the Bible that they didn't do away with them, they just chose to ignore if they could.

Is this the end of Christanity or the faith that seeks sola scriptura for it's foundation? Not likely. We've been here and done this before.

The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth

It's less of a dissection and more of a distillation of the teachings of Jesus. Jefferson had great respect for Christ's social teachings. He just didn't buy the miracle stories. Jefferson wrote the original manuscript was written parallel in French, English, Latin and Greek. And Jefferson was also an anti-Calvinist.

What is the real issue? What is illogical with Christians setting aside a couple of hours a week to worship God?

Nothing is wrong with it...it's the fact that they learn to be "Christ-like" and the vast majority do nothing about it. I would venture to guess that a large majority of church goers -go simply because its expected. They go, sit, half-pay attention, pretend to read the hymnal while the songs are being sung, bow there heads and say no prayers, shake the preachers hand, and then its another week of "I'm a Christian, why aren't you?"

Of course, no one would admit that.

The point is - what good is "worshiping God" if you do nothing about it? I did an interview with a minister for a paper I wrote in my World Religions course at Eastern. I asked him pretty much the same question about how people go to church, learn to be Christ like, and then do nothing to better the community. He replied, "Well, our church takes care of that for them. We have community outreach."

I have never had one once of respect for her to start with. Oprah is a complete joke. I really believe that the woman thinks that she is God . I believe that she has always tried to "pick" her charities to promote herself all the time making everyone think that she is great.

In todays society it is sad to say but this will not bring her down like it should. This entire mind set / new age / scientology or whatver they call it now is one thing and one thing only.............Athiest Crap! I guess that we should really pray for people like this. Oprah, 99.9% of Hollywood, a big portion of our politicians, etc.,etc.. I call it the "Clinton Philosophy" or "Clintonism" :D = "Do anything that you want, say your sorry and it is o.k. no rules, no laws (except for the ones we want), no penalties and all is fine". (Osama Obama Bin Winfrey) falls into this category as well I am afraid. I was hoping to hear more from him ad that he would be different, obviously not. This pretty much makes up my mind on him. Obama keeps Oprah and her $$$ (and that is what it is about) around then he is just another on my "no vote" list.

I honestly haven't heard much of anything from anyone on either side/party that has impressed me.

What a choice we all have to choose from this November.......

I think you are grossly over-generalizing and labeling the "large majority" as hypocrites. I know you were only venturing a guess ;). Certainly there are hypocrites in the Christian ranks, and they will have to answer for some of the things you are talking about. However, don't paint us all with the same brush.

The Worship service itself is a time to honor God and praise Him. God is the audience and we who are in attendance are not. We are not there to learn to be Christ-like, or learn anything for that matter. We are there to love God and praise Him in our acts of worship.

The time to study and learn to be better Christians is on our own time either during Bible study sessions alone or in groups such as Sunday School or Bible Study hour together.

The poor and needy are all around us and we do have a Christian obligation to reach out to them. But we are not to forsake our Worship to do so, Christ illustrated that point himself in a way. Your original post indicated to me that you were suggesting we spend ALL our time helping others and that we weren't supposed to go to Worship until all the poor and needy were attended to, which would, of course never be attained.
