Walton Girls BBall: What's the problem?

Featured Replies

real news:

Walton-Verona senior guard Lauren Heeger was recently named Conference Player of the Week for the NCKC (North Central Kentucky Conference). She had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, in a 60-59 win over Trimble County.

She was also recognized at the school for breaking the record for 3-pointers made in a career.

Heeger is one of seven seniors on the team, which was 2-5 through Dec. 27.

The Bearcats play a 32nd District seeding game Friday at Grant County and will be aiming for the All "A" Eighth Region championship. The tourney starts Jan. 16 at Trimble County.

.

Congrats Heeger! Keep playing hard!

Yes congrats! She is a great player.

Saw Waltons Coach at the Gallatin Steel Tourney, doing some scouting of Carroll, Owen and Ludlow. Looks like she is trying to get her team ready for an All A run.

That's news I like to hear! Glad to see her going out and trying to get ready for the up-coming games, now all I hope is that she puts a good game plan in, to let the girls have a chance to beat some of those teams.

Make up your mind is it academics or basketball these girls are here for, something doesn't seem quite right.

I was wondering the same thing. Would like to hear from Countrygirl.

Hey now, Let's not get crazy I do not want her to do too good of a job scouting Carroll;)

I do like the WV team and I know that there has been much discussion on the board about the Fresh. They do have some good players but in the Fresh game against Carroll ( no offense meant) I did not see anyone that I thought was ready to replace a Varsity girl. They have the Dixon girl who is a very nice player but the size and experience of their upper classmen could not be replaced.

Totally agree! Dixon, IMO, is the only who is ready to step-up to the varsity level.

Just remember, for the game plan to be effective, the girls must execute it.

I understand that, but looking back on the game plan's that were given to the girls, against other teams, where not the right way to attack or defend the current team they were facing. It wasn't the girls execution, but the plan that was given to them, hurt their chance to win.

I understand. But let's don't put it all on the coach. She doen't shoot the ball or play defense. Both, the player's and the coach, have to share responsibility.

Jeanie can you help us out here, what is going on?

I think it is a combination of both academics and athletics. Parents want their kids to go to Walton because of the academic recognition that the school has received over the past few years. It's recognized as one of the best in the State. Additionally, if their child is an athlete (I'm talking average player, not a superstar), he/she will have a much better chance of playing since Walton is a small school compared to going to a larger school. The kid will have a better opportunity to play more and get recognition, something they might not have gotten if they had went to a large school because of the numbers. This is a win-win situation for the parents and the kid. They get the best of both worlds.

I know what your saying but does Walton gurantee a trip to Harvard? Sandlin lives in Williamstown a small school with a good coach, it just seems strange to me that so many girls live out of district and play ball. If you tell me that there are as many out of district kids not playing sports coming to Walton for strictly academics I would understand this a little more I guess.

Over the last few years Walton-Verona has had to limit their number of tuition students due to overcrowding.. At Walton, like at most small schools, most of their students participate in athletics, this is true of the tuition students as well. However, with the opening of the new high school there will be more seats open for tuition students and I would expect their out of district population to rise again. I have heard that there is a waiting list for people to get in as tuition students.

Yes congrats! She is a great player.

She better be looking out for Grant as well as Owen, those are their next games and can set the tone for the rest of the season.
