Walton Girls BBall: What's the problem?

Featured Replies

Over the last few years Walton-Verona has had to limit their number of tuition students due to overcrowding.. At Walton, like at most small schools, most of their students participate in athletics, this is true of the tuition students as well. However, with the opening of the new high school there will be more seats open for tuition students and I would expect their out of district population to rise again. I have heard that there is a waiting list for people to get in as tuition students.

I have seen the new sports facilities I just hope Walton's excellent academic reputation is not ruined so a few can play sports.

She better be looking out for Grant as well as Owen, those are their next games and can set the tone for the rest of the season.

I'm sure she has done her homework and will have her girls ready for the challenge. These two games, like all of them, must be settled on the court. If they play hard, shoot well, and defend aggressively the Lady Cats will win. It's up to the girls to do all of these.

I know what your saying but does Walton gurantee a trip to Harvard? Sandlin lives in Williamstown a small school with a good coach, it just seems strange to me that so many girls live out of district and play ball. If you tell me that there are as many out of district kids not playing sports coming to Walton for strictly academics I would understand this a little more I guess.

Sandlin played AAU softball on a team that is coached by Anderson. Her dad was an assistant coach for Williamstown, but resigned. A couple of weeks later, Sandlin was going to Walton. Pretty coincidental.

She also played on an AAU Basketball team (comprised mostly of Walton players with a Walton coach) before she transferred to Walton. Sounds like there was a double connection to Walton. Again, pretty coincidental.

How would that happen, by accepting tuition students who play sports?? Believe me, more than one of my friends has tried to get their kid in WV and were unable to because their kid did not have a good enough academic resume'. Tuition students are taken, and allowed to stay, only if they are the cream of the crop academically. If anything the opening of the new high school and the ability for the district to accept more tuition students will only improve WV's academic status.

As opposed to a kid transferring to a school where she knows no one, has no connections, and does not know what to expect. I think her involvement with these players on these teams IS the reason she came to WV, but I doubt it was recruiting on WV's part.

and I am sure Coach Rosen is doing everything in her power to get them ready to win these games. She has to know how important they are.

Why transfer at all then. Williamstown is pretty high academically (was 11th in the state this year on the CATS scoring, I believe) also, plus she played both varsity basketball and softball as a 6th grader. The kicker is the parents did not move. All I said was it was pretty coincidental. I never said anything about recruiting.

In all reallity 1734 it is what it is and always will be.

I agree. I'm sure she has done her homework and got the game plans ready. Now she must communicate these to the players and they have to follow through and perform on the court.

I heard that there was a non-mandatory open gym for the varsity today and the only player that showed up was the Freshman - Dixon. I think that tells it all regarding the state of the Lady Cats. The coach was there, I wonder where the rest of the players were?

I have heard that the open gyms they have had in the past are unorganized and really not worth attending. Freshman don't drive so a parent probably had to take her to practice. Most of the upper classman probably drive and are not going to risk it in bad weather to play a game of knockout.

It's an open gym, not a practice. The players could have used it to work on skills that they are lacking, get some shooting in, shoot some free-throws. With the games they have coming up, and the level they have been performing at you would think they would be lining up outside of the gym to get some time in. Good players find ways to get better and fix problems when they are struggling, others find excuses and cast blame elsewhere. I do not always agree with what has been done at WVHS lately, but how can anyone find fault with the coach on this one.

I didn't see the coach brought up anywhere in my post.

Sorry, I guess when you said they were unorganized and not worth attending I should have assumed you were talking about the players and not the coach. My bad..
